Chapter 2 - In Plain Sight

For four agonizing months, Hannah lived a waking nightmare behind a mask of maternal bliss. She attended every prenatal appointment alone while Derek claimed emergency meetings with longshoremen in Cleveland. She smiled at family dinners, poured wine for his crooked business associates, and watched him play with little Aubrey on the manicured lawn of Cedar Point, all while secretly documenting every single movement of his financial apparatus.

The betrayal was far deeper than a crude corporate embezzlement. With Julie Nelson’s quiet assistance, Hannah discovered that Alexis Warren wasn't just Derek’s lover; she was his co-conspirator. Alexis had spent the past year renting high-end storage facilities across Lake County, purchasing single-trip bearer bonds, and setting up offshore holding accounts in Grand Cayman under an alias: Matthew Garrett.

Derek had already obtained a forged second passport under that name. Hannah had discovered it purely by chance while searching his mahogany gun safe for Aubrey’s missing birth certificate. Tucked behind a pair of matching semi-automatic pistols was a black leather folio containing the crisp blue passport, complete with Derek’s unsmiling face above the name Matthew Garrett, and two one-way open tickets to Zurich dated for mid-January.

He was planning to vanish the moment Hannah went into labor. Under the Graham trust bylaws, if Hannah became medically incapacitated during childbirth, Derek held temporary power of attorney over all assets. He had quietly altered the medical directives through a compromised hospital administrator, ensuring he could liquidate the remaining Graham trust accounts in the event of an emergency. He was betting on her vulnerability. He was betting that a woman thirty-eight weeks pregnant would be too exhausted, too terrified, and too dependent to ever fight back.

He had horribly underestimated who raised her.

Hannah remembered sitting at her late father’s desk in the middle of a November thunderstorm, staring out at the violent waves crashing against the stone seawall of Lake Erie. Julian Graham had started as a dock hand who carried steel cables until his shoulders bled. Julian had taught her that power in business was never about who yelled the loudest in a boardroom; it was about who controlled the paper.

“A man who thinks he’s invisible always leaves muddy footprints,” Julian had once told her over a game of chess in this very study. “When you catch a wolf in your sheep pen, Hannah, you don’t shout to scare him away. You lock the gate, you secure the perimeter, and you call the hunters.”

Hannah had spent twelve weeks methodically building an ironclad paper trap. She authorized Julie to execute a forensic audit through an independent auditing firm in Chicago, completely bypassing Harper Freight’s corrupt internal accountants. Every dollar Derek had funneled out of Graham Logistics to Lakeshore Materials was cross-referenced with bank timestamps, IP logs from his personal luxury penthouse in downtown Buffalo, and private jet travel itineraries booked through Harper Freight's corporate card.

By mid-December, Hannah had accumulated over eight hundred pages of undeniable evidence detailing interstate wire fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, and corporate espionage. She had delivered copies to a secure federal repository, sealed until her command.

All she needed was the definitive, irrefutable act of abandonment. If Derek left his heavily pregnant wife on Christmas Eve to board a private jet with his mistress under a falsified corporate flight plan, the federal courts and the family trust board would have undeniable proof of gross moral turpitude and breach of fiduciary duty.

And tonight, Derek had walked right into the snare.
