Chapter 7 - The Breach

The emergency red backup lights bathed the penthouse in an eerie crimson glow.
The security alarms blared deafeningly. Over the comms, Marco’s frantic voice cut through the static: ""Boss! The freight elevator was rigged with C4! Vance's mercenaries breached the lower lobby—they’re coming up through the private stairs!""
""Jax! Secure the children in the panic room!"" Vincent barked, instantly transitioning from a remorseful ex-husband back into a battlefield commander.
Lily started crying, the loud alarms terrifying her, while Ethan stood bravely in front of her, clenching his small fists. ""Mom! Dad!""
I ran to them, scooping Lily into my arms while Vincent swept Ethan onto his shoulder. Jax led the way down the narrow corridor toward the reinforced steel safe room behind the library.
Suddenly, the fire door at the end of the hall burst open. Three men in tactical gear raised automatic rifles.
""Get down!"" Vincent shouted, shoving Jax, the kids, and me behind a marble partition as a hail of bullets ripped through the artwork and drywall, showering us with plaster and glass shards.
Jax returned fire with brutal efficiency, dropping two of the gunmen, but a ricocheting round caught Jax in the thigh, sending him crashing to the floor with a groan.
""Mommy!"" Lily shrieked, burying her face into my chest.
""I'm here, baby, you're safe,"" I sobbed, shielding both children with my own body.
Vincent didn't hesitate. He picked up Jax’s fallen assault rifle, stepped directly into the open hallway, and fired with deadly precision, taking down the third intruder. But more heavy footsteps were pounding up the concrete stairwell. Vance had sent an army.
Vincent turned back to us. Blood was dripping from a graze on his forearm, but his eyes were completely focused. He reached down, pressed the biometric panel on the panic room door, and pulled the heavy steel hatch open.
""Get inside,"" Vincent ordered me. ""Both of you. Now.""
""Vincent, come with us!"" I cried out, grabbing his jacket. ""The panic room can withstand an air strike! Come inside!""
Vincent looked down at me, then at Ethan and Lily. He smiled—a sad, beautiful, tender smile that I hadn't seen since the day we got married.
""The internal override failed when the power blew,"" he said calmly. ""Someone has to hold the manual locking lever from the outside until the police tactical units arrive. If I come in, they’ll breach the door before it seals.""
""No!"" I screamed. ""Vincent, you can't!""
""Dad!"" Ethan cried, tears finally breaking through his stoic little face. ""Don't go!""

Vincent knelt down, kissing Lily’s forehead, then placed his hand on Ethan’s shoulder. ""Take care of your mother, Ethan. Be the man I wasn't.""
He shoved me inside, stepped back, and slammed the steel door shut.
