Chapter 1 - The Billion-Dollar Hostage Situation

The mahogany double doors of the boardroom swung open with an ominous groan. Vincent Moretti’s top captains, men who dealt in shipping routes, high-stakes real estate, and ruthless back-alley enforcement, went dead quiet. Standing in the doorway was not a rival cartel boss or federal agents with a warrant.
It was a five-year-old boy in an impeccably pressed navy blazer and a tiny girl wearing sparkly plastic heels and a pink tulle princess dress.
Ethan Moretti-Carter did not blink under the gaze of a dozen hardened criminals. Instead, he marched forward, dragging a rolling dinosaur suitcase across the polished Italian marble, while his sister Lily clutched a plush bunny and beamed like she had just arrived at Disneyland.
""Which one of you is Vincent?"" Ethan demanded, his voice crisp and completely devoid of fear.
At the head of the table, Vincent slowly stood up. His imposing six-foot-three frame shadowed the room, his jaw clenched, his tailored bespoke charcoal suit emphasizing his absolute authority over this city. But as his eyes locked onto the boy, the breath left his lungs.
It was like looking directly into a mirror from thirty years ago. The boy had his obsidian eyes, the sharp cut of his jawline, and the exact same arrogant tilt of the chin.
""I am,"" Vincent said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that usually made grown men tremble.
Lily let go of Ethan’s sleeve and skipped right past two armed guards. ""Daddy! You look taller than Mommy said. Mommy said you were big, mean, and had too many suits.""
A sharp cough echoed through the room. Marco, Vincent’s trusted right-hand man and chief of security, looked like his eyes were going to pop out of his skull. ""Boss... do you need us to—""
""Get out,"" Vincent commanded, never breaking eye contact with Ethan.
""Boss?""
""Every single one of you. Clear the floor. Now.""
The men scrambled out faster than if a grenade had been dropped in the center of the table. Within ten seconds, the vast executive suite was empty except for the undisputed king of Chicago and two toddlers.
Ethan stopped two feet in front of Vincent’s desk. With solemn, practiced dignity, he reached into his jacket pocket and retrieved an envelope stamped with a lipstick kiss. He tossed it onto the glass desk.
""Mom said you’ve had five years of peace and quiet while she changed diapers, cleaned vomit, and paid pediatric bills,"" Ethan stated coolly. ""She says it’s your shift now. Two months. If you return us early, she’ll tell the media you couldn't handle your own blood.""
Vincent’s hands shook—an involuntary tremor he hadn't felt in a decade—as he ripped open the envelope. The handwriting was unmistakably Emily’s. Elegant, mocking, and razor-sharp.
Dear Vincent,
Remember the night in the rain outside the penthouse? You told me you regretted ever meeting me. Well, three weeks later, two heartbeats showed up on an ultrasound. Ethan has your stubborn temper; Lily has my taste for revenge. Here is their vaccine schedule, Lily’s allergy to peanuts, and Ethan’s favorite bedtime book about trains. Don't look for me. My phone is at the bottom of Lake Michigan. Good luck.
— Emily.
""Where is she?"" Vincent barked, stepping around the desk, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer. ""Where did she go?""
Ethan folded his arms across his tiny chest. ""Mommy took a taxi to the airport. She said if we tell you where she went, she won’t buy us cotton candy when she comes back.""
Lily tugged at Vincent's tailored slacks, leaving a smudge of strawberry lollipop on the thousand-dollar wool. ""Daddy, I'm hungry. Where is the chicken nuggets room?""
May you like
Vincent stared down at the sticky fingerprint, then up at his son’s cold, triumphant smirk. For five years, he had believed Emily had walked out because she didn't love him anymore. He had buried his grief beneath steel and empire. But she hadn't run away empty-handed. She had stolen the only thing that mattered, and now she had weaponized them against him.
""Marco!"" Vincent roared toward the intercom. ""Lock down every private airstrip, bus terminal, and hotel in Cook County. Find Emily Carter. And someone bring fifty pounds of chicken nuggets to my office immediately!""
