Chapter 7 - The Trap Snaps Shut

The sunrise over Chicago broke clean and golden, scattering the dark storm clouds that had choked the city for days. By 8:00 AM, the local and national news broadcasts were dominated by a single story: the complete collapse of the Kane criminal syndicate and the indictment of high-ranking corporate executives across Illinois. The anonymous tipster, cited by federal prosecutors as an internal auditor who had tragically passed away two years prior, was hailed as a posthumous hero.

At the Moretti estate, the heavy iron gates remained locked, but the suffocating tension that had gripped the halls was gone.

Dante stood by the marble fireplace in the drawing room, wearing a clean charcoal suit. His knuckles were bruised, and his eyes showed the fatigue of two days without sleep, but his posture was upright, unyielding. Gordon walked in, carrying a leather briefcase.

""The feds took Kane and Luke straight to the federal courthouse in Chicago,"" Gordon reported quietly. ""Nick signed over Marcus’s encrypted files under corporate whistleblower protections. Our legitimate businesses are completely separated from the fallout. The family name survives, Dante. Clean.""

Dante stared into the empty hearth. ""The family is finished, Gordon. The old ways are done. We liquidate the dock contracts. We transition everything into legitimate maritime logistics and tech infrastructure. No more shadows. No more blood money.""

Gordon looked at the young Don, surprise flickering across his weathered face before turning into profound respect. ""Your father would have called that surrender.""

""My father died with six bullets in his spine and an empty room,"" Dante replied flatly. ""I intend to live long enough to see the people I care about grow old.""

The sound of small, hurried footsteps came from the entrance hall.

Dante turned just as the drawing room doors were pushed open. Sophie bounded inside, clutching Mr. Buttons. Behind her, Rex trotted happily, his tail swinging like a metronome.

Anna followed closely behind. She was no longer wearing her maid's uniform; she wore a simple, elegant navy dress Dante had ordered brought to the estate that morning. Her face was flushed, her eyes red from a night of crying, but the terror that had haunted her for two years was entirely absent.

""Mr. Dante!"" Sophie shouted, stopping in front of him. ""Rex did not eat the carpet! He was a good boy!""

Rex sat down immediately, lifting one paw to rest on Dante’s polished leather shoe.

Dante knelt down until he was face-to-face with the little girl. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a small velvet box. ""I believe I made a promise to the sheriff.""

Sophie gasped as Dante opened the box. Inside was a tiny, intricately crafted five-point sheriff’s star made of solid polished gold, fitted with a safety clasp designed for fabric.

""Is that real gold?"" Sophie whispered, her eyes shining with wonder.

""Only the best for Mr. Buttons,"" Dante said gravely. He took the bear, carefully pinning the star right over the uneven black stitches on its chest. ""There. He is officially the protector of this house.""

Sophie took the bear back, hugging it against her face. ""He looks very handsome. Even with his crooked smile.""

Anna stepped forward, her voice trembling with emotion. ""Mr. Moretti... the news... we saw the broadcasts this morning. Luke... Kane... it’s all over?""

Dante stood up, meeting Anna’s gaze. ""Marcus won, Anna. The men who took him away will never see the sun as free men again. And his name has been entered into the state record as a protected whistleblower. His pension and estates have been released to you.""

Anna covered her face with her hands, sobbing with relief. For two years, she had lived in the dirt, terrified that every shadow held her husband's killers. Now, the shadow had lifted forever.
