Chapter 4 - A Playground for Wolves

By ten o’clock, the mansion had grown unnaturally still. The rain turned into a driving sheet of water that rattled against the glass like shrapnel. Down in the fortified basement, behind a hidden vault door disguised as a row of vintage wine racks, Anna held Sophie in her arms. Sophie was fast asleep, her arm wrapped tightly around Mr. Buttons, while Rex lay curled at the foot of the reinforced sofa, his ears twitching at every subterranean rumble.

Upstairs, Dante stepped into his private armory. He didn't wear a three-piece suit tonight. He pulled on a tactical turtleneck and a Kevlar vest, strapping a customized semi-automatic to his shoulder harness. Gordon entered silently, carrying an encrypted tablet that showed drone surveillance feeds from the rail yard on 35th Street.

""Luke just left through the back service gate,"" Gordon reported, his voice hollow. ""He disabled the GPS tracker on the family sedan, exactly as expected. Kane’s convoy is already in position by Warehouse B.""

""And our perimeter units?"" Dante asked, checking the slide on his weapon with mechanical precision.

""Nick has forty men surrounding the perimeter. We have the Chicago Police Department’s organized crime task force three miles out on standby. The files Marcus left gave the feds everything they needed to issue immediate federal warrants for Kane’s entire high command. We don't even have to break the law to bury Kane tonight.""

""We bury Kane through the courts,"" Dante said, snapping a fresh magazine into place. ""Luke belongs to me.""

""Dante... he’s your brother,"" Gordon pleaded quietly. ""Your father made you promise on his deathbed—""

""My father didn't know his youngest son would kill innocent men and trade our family’s honor for Kane’s blood money,"" Dante cut in ruthlessly. ""My father is dead. The family is me.""

Twenty minutes later, two black SUVs rolled out of the estate’s hidden garage into the storm. The tires hissed against the flooded asphalt as they navigated the rain-swept streets toward the industrial wasteland flanking the Chicago River.

The rail yard was a graveyard of rusted boxcars, weeds, and decaying metal frames. Rain fell in blinding curtains, obscuring the skyline. Dante stepped out of the SUV into the mud, his long trench coat billowing in the freezing wind. Nick met him beneath the shelter of an abandoned grain elevator.

""Luke entered Warehouse B ten minutes ago,"" Nick said, water dripping from the brim of his tactical cap. ""Kane brought six bodyguards. Heavy weapons. They think they’re sealing the deal tonight. Kane’s hit squad is already en route to the estate. They don't know that our strike team intercepted their vans two blocks from your gate.""

""Good,"" Dante said coldly. ""Kane’s men at the estate are neutralized?""

""Disarmed and cuffed in the back of unmarked vans. Not a single shot fired near the house.""

Dante exhaled a cloud of white vapor into the freezing night air. ""Then let us go conclude business with my brother.""

Dante walked toward the warehouse doors. Every step was deliberate. He didn't run; he didn't sneak. He pushed the heavy rusted iron door open with a screech of tortured metal that echoed through the cavernous, hollow building.

Inside, beneath the yellow glow of dangling industrial halogen lamps, Luke stood beside a folding table. Victor Kane, a broad-shouldered man with a scar running from his ear to his jawline, was counting stacks of bearer bonds from an open briefcase.

When the door slammed against the brick wall, every man in the room whipped around, drawing weapons. Kane’s guards raised automatic rifles.

Luke dropped the digital flash drive he was holding. His face turned the color of ash. ""Dante?""
