Chapter 2 - Stitched Lies and Silent Watchers

The morning sun cast pale yellow rectangles across the grand dining table. Dante sat at the head, sipping black espresso without touching his breakfast. Across from him sat Luke, immaculately groomed in a bespoke Italian suit, scrolling through his phone while buttering a croissant.

""Gordon says the union reps at Pier 42 are getting restless,"" Luke remarked casually, not looking up. ""They want another two percent on the container handling fee. I told them we’d consider it if they guarantee zero dock inspections next month.""

Dante watched his brother’s hands. Steady. Calm. The hands of a man who didn't look like he had sold out his family's armory two years ago. ""Did you clear that with me first?""

Luke flashed that trademark boyish grin that had charmed half the judges in Cook County. ""Thought I’d save you the headache, big brother. You’ve been looking stressed lately. That whole thing with the kid and the dog yesterday... honestly, you went soft. Sewing a teddy bear? The street guys are going to think you're turning into a social worker.""

""A promise to a child is an obligation,"" Dante said coldly. ""Something our father failed to teach you, apparently.""

Luke rolled his eyes, taking a bite of his pastry. ""Dad taught us to survive. That’s all that matters in this city.""

Before Dante could answer, the dining room doors swung open. Sophie skipped inside, ignoring every single protocol of the Moretti household. She wore bright yellow rain boots that squeaked on the marble, and Mr. Buttons was tucked securely under her arm, his jagged black stitches proudly displayed.

""Rex ate my pancake,"" Sophie announced to the room at large, stopping beside Dante’s chair.

Dante looked down at her. ""All of it?""

""Only half. The half with syrup."" She pointed an accusatory finger toward the hall, where Rex sat cautiously out of reach. ""He is an unrepentant thief.""

Luke burst out laughing, leaning forward on his elbows. ""Hey there, little pest. Come here. I’ve got some strawberries you can have.""

Sophie turned her head, studying Luke with the uncanny intuition that only young children possess. She did not move toward him. Instead, she took half a step backward, pressing her shoulder against Dante’s tailored pant leg. ""No thank you.""

""Why not?"" Luke teased, holding up a red berry. ""They’re sweet. Just like you.""

""Your shoes are too shiny,"" Sophie said plainly. ""Bad people wear shoes that reflect the ceiling lights.""

Luke’s smile stiffened for a microsecond before he laughed it off. ""Kids are weird. What did your mother teach you, anyway?""

""She taught me to stay away from wolves,"" Dante intervened smoothly, resting his broad palm gently on Sophie’s small shoulder. The girl didn't flinch away from his touch; she leaned into it. ""Go to the kitchen, Sophie. Tell Mrs. Higgins to make you fresh pancakes. Use the back hallway.""

""Yes, Mr. Dante."" Sophie gave Luke one more suspicious glare, then trotted away, her boots squeaking rhythmically until the door swung shut.

Luke watched her go, his eyes narrowing slightly. ""You're really letting the maid's kid run around the estate like an heiress? Word travels, Dante. Kane is looking for weaknesses. If he thinks you have a soft spot for domestic help, he won't hesitate to leverage it.""

Dante set his espresso cup down with a sharp clink that echoed through the vast dining room. ""Let Kane try. He’ll find that my soft spots are made of reinforced steel.""

Luke chuckled, though the sound was slightly strained. ""Sure, Dante. Whatever you say. I’m heading down to the marina to inspect the freight manifests.""

""Take Nick with you,"" Dante commanded.

Luke frowned. ""I don't need a babysitter.""

""Nick knows the manifest signatures better than anyone. Take him.""

Dante’s eyes locked onto Luke’s. It was a silent challenge. For five agonizing seconds, neither man blinked. Finally, Luke held up his hands in mock surrender. ""Fine. Nick comes. See you tonight.""

As Luke exited through the grand foyer, Gordon Riley slipped into the room through the side entrance. The older consigliere looked weary, the deep lines around his mouth carved deeper by decades of survival.

""You had Nick clone Luke’s burner phone last night,"" Gordon whispered, leaning over Dante’s shoulder.

""Did you listen to the audio logs?"" Dante asked without looking up.

Gordon closed his eyes, exhaling a ragged sigh. ""God forgive us, Dante. It’s worse than the memory card showed. Luke isn't just selling shipping routes to Kane. Kane promised him your seat at the head of the Commission. The hit on Marcus Carter two years ago? Luke personally gave the order. Marcus had found the shell company Luke used to buy Kane’s loyalty.""

Dante closed his hand into a fist so tight his knuckles turned bone white. He felt a tear in his soul, the final thread of fraternal loyalty snapping like dried twine. ""Where is the drop scheduled?""

""Tonight,"" Gordon whispered. ""Midnight. The abandoned rail yard on 35th. Luke is delivering the digital master keys to our logistics network. In exchange, Kane’s hit team will be given the clearance codes to bypass the estate gates while you sleep.""

Dante stood up slowly, towering over the table. The hesitation that had held his hand the previous night was entirely gone, burned away by the cold furnace of absolute betrayal. ""Tell Nick to prepare the perimeter teams. Nobody touches Kane until I give the word. And Gordon?""

May you like

""Yes, Dante?""

""Make sure Anna and Sophie are placed in the safe room under the wine cellar by ten o’clock. If a single scratch touches either of them, I will burn this entire city to ash.""
