Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Showdown

The fiftieth floor of DeLuca Tower was swathed in floor-to-ceiling glass, offering a panoramic view of Manhattan covered in white snow. Around the expansive oval table made of imported Italian marble, twenty board members sat in tailored suits, sipping espresso and murmuring quietly among themselves.

At the head of the table sat Hector DeLuca, looking immaculate in a charcoal three-piece suit, though the slight twitch in his left eye betrayed his nerves. To his right sat Carmen, dressed in an emerald designer dress, pretending to read through the corporate dossiers. Paola and Richard sat adjacent, grinning eagerly at the prospect of the restructuring that would grant them permanent seats on the executive council.

""Ladies and gentlemen,"" Hector began, clearing his throat and tapping the podium with his signet ring. ""We are gathered today to finalize the restructuring of DeLuca Enterprises. As you know, my late son Julian's shares have remained dormant in escrow for four years following his tragic passing. Under our current bylaws, keeping those shares inactive places our commercial lines at risk. Today, we will formally vote to reallocate those shares into the general family holding company.""

""A motion that requires unanimous board approval, doesn't it, Hector?"" a booming voice interrupted.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Every head turned.

I stepped into the room, dressed in my sharpest navy suit, holding Renata's hand. Beside us walked Arthur Vance, flanked by two federal marshals in plainclothes and three uniformed New York City police officers.

Carmen gasped, dropping her pen. Paola jumped to her feet. Hector gripped the edges of the mahogany podium until his knuckles turned white.

""Mauricio!"" Hector snarled, trying to regain his composure. ""This is a closed executive meeting! Security, remove these people immediately!""

""Security isn't coming, Hector,"" Vance announced smoothly, pulling a crisp stack of federal court orders from his leather portfolio. ""Your head of security was taken into custody forty minutes ago at the Midtown garage. He is currently singing like a canary regarding the wire transfers sent to a mechanic in Tampa, Florida.""

Murmurs of shock and confusion rippled across the board members. Several independent directors leaned back, looking alarmed.

""What is the meaning of this insolence?"" Paola snapped, glaring at me. ""Mauricio, you have lost your mind! Bringing this adopted orphan into a corporate board meeting? Get her out of here!""

""Don't you dare raise your voice in the presence of the majority shareholder of this company, Paola,"" I said, my voice echoing with terrifying authority.

Hector slammed both hands down. ""She is a nobody! She has no legal status!""

""On the contrary, Mr. DeLuca,"" Vance stepped forward, laying the documents directly in front of the independent board members. ""This is a certified paternity registry backed by federal DNA testing, signed by the Chief Medical Examiner of New York. This little girl is Renata DeLuca, the sole biological daughter of the late Julian DeLuca.""

Gasps filled the room. Independent directors scrambled to grab the sheets of paper, their eyes widening as they read the genetic match percentages and the original trust clauses.

""And under the irrevocable last will and testament of Lorenzo DeLuca,"" Vance continued, pointing a finger directly at Hector, ""Renata DeLuca is the lawful inheritor of fifty-five percent of DeLuca Enterprises. Her legal guardian, Mauricio DeLuca, holds full voting sovereignty as of 9:00 AM this morning.""
