Chapter 4 - The Safe House

I didn't take Renata back to my penthouse in the city. Hector had the security codes, and his private security team had keys to my garage. Instead, I drove three hours north through the driving snowstorm, heading toward a small, secluded lake house I had purchased years ago under a private holding company—a place my family knew nothing about.

Renata fell asleep thirty minutes into the drive, exhausted by the emotional turmoil and the physical labor my mother had subjected her to. I kept glancing in the rearview mirror, watching her small chest rise and fall beneath the heavy wool blanket. The resemblance to Julian was so stark now that the veil had been lifted. The slight cleft in her chin, the unruly curls of chestnut hair, the gentle arch of her brows—it was like looking at my brother when we were children building tree forts in the backyard.

How could my parents have looked into those eyes every holiday and chosen cruelty over love?

The answer was simple: greed. Hector and Carmen had become addicted to the billionaire lifestyle afforded by Julian's frozen shares. Without a living heir, the dividend payments defaulted to the acting trustees—my parents and Paola. They had divided millions of dollars each quarter, funding Paola’s European vacations and my father’s reckless real estate acquisitions. Renata was a living, breathing eviction notice to their vanity.

We arrived at the cabin well past midnight. I carried Renata inside, turning on the heat and tucking her into a massive feather bed with extra blankets. I sat on the edge of the mattress, running my hand through her hair until her breathing settled into a deep, rhythmic slumber.

""Nobody will ever make you wash another dish against your will, sweetheart,"" I whispered in the dark. ""I swear it on Julian's memory.""

I walked into the living room, brewed a pot of black coffee, and opened my laptop. It was 1:30 AM on December 26th.

I dialed the private number listed on the Vance & Sterling letterhead. To my surprise, the phone rang only twice before a deep, gravelly voice answered.

""Vance speaking.""

""Mr. Vance. My name is Mauricio DeLuca. I am holding your letter regarding Renata.""

A heavy sigh came across the line. ""Mr. DeLuca. I was hoping you would call before your father found a way to bury those documents. Did he see them?""

""He saw them,"" I said, staring out at the snow blanketed across the frozen lake. ""And he threatened to destroy my career and Renata’s life if I didn't hand them over. Mr. Vance, I need the whole truth. How did your firm locate her?""

""We didn't just locate her, Mauricio,"" Arthur Vance said, his tone grim. ""We've been protecting her estate in secret for three years. Elena, the mother, came to my office three weeks before she died. She was terrified. She told me that Julian’s car crash wasn't an accident. She claimed Julian found evidence that your father was embezzling funds from the primary trust to cover massive overseas gambling debts.""

My coffee cup hovered inches from my lips. My heart hammered against my ribs. ""Embezzlement? Hector?""

""Tens of millions, Mauricio. Julian threatened to take the forensic audits to the federal authorities on Christmas Eve, four years ago. That night, Julian’s brake lines were tampered with. The police report ruled it driver error due to black ice, but Elena knew better. She hid Renata, gave her up anonymously with coded markers, and gave me instructions: when Renata turned six—the age required for formal trust inheritance registry—I was to deliver the files directly to you. Only you.""

May you like

""Why me?"" I asked, my voice cracking.

""Because Julian told Elena that in a family full of vipers, you were the only man who possessed a soul.""
