Chapter 7 - Darkness and Iron

Chaos exploded in the pitch black.
The glass walls did not let in the moonlight; Calder had engaged the emergency blast shutters, slamming heavy steel plates over every window with the deafening thunder of dropping guillotines. The room was cast into complete, suffocating void.
"Fire!" Emmett shrieked from across the room.
Muzzle flashes strobed through the dark, loud and blinding, but Emmett's men were firing blind. The deafening cracks of gunfire tore apart the sofa, shattering crystal decanters and gouging deep trenches into the hardwood floor.
Calder moved with the brutal efficiency of a shadow born in harbor alleys.
He lunged low. His hands found the nearest shooter by the muzzle flare. Calder grabbed the man’s extended wrist, shattered it with an upward twist, and drove his knee directly into the mercenary's chest. The man dropped without a sound. Calder stripped the tactical sidearm from his holster, spun, and fired three double-taps into the muzzle flashes across the hearth.
Groans of agony echoed over the gunfire as two more shooters collapsed to the floor.
"Mara! Behind the bar!" Calder roared over the din.
Mara didn't hesitate. Even in the blinding dark, she remembered the exact blueprint of Calder’s penthouse. She grabbed Clara by the collar and pulled her down behind the solid mahogany bar, throwing her own body across the teenager as stray ricochets pinged off the metal liquor racks above them.
"Stay down, Clara! Don't move!" Mara breathed, her voice steady despite the searing agony in her shoulder.
Suddenly, an emergency backup flare hissed to life in the center of the living room, bathing the chamber in violent red smoke.
Emmett stood near the balcony exit, holding a smoking flare in one hand and a heavy revolver in the other. His final remaining bodyguard was backing toward the service door.
"Calder!" Emmett screamed, his eyes wild with cocaine and panic. "I’ll kill them! I’ll kill both of them!"
Emmett turned his gun toward the bar where Mara and Clara were huddled.
Calder stepped out of the red smoke.
Before Emmett could pull the trigger, Calder closed the distance like a charging freight train. He tackled Emmett across the glass table, sending crystal, scotch, and shattered wood flying across the room. The revolver clattered across the floor, spinning into the darkness.
Emmett pulled a combat knife from his boot, slashing wildly. The blade caught Calder across his left forearm, slicing through the heavy wool jacket and biting deep into flesh. Blood sprayed across the floor.
Calder didn't even flinch. The pain was nothing compared to the sixteen years of lies that had poisoned his life.
Calder locked his fingers around Emmett’s throat, lifting his younger brother entirely off the ground and slamming him against the reinforced steel blast shutter. The heavy plate shuddered from the impact.
Emmett gasped for air, kicking wildly, dropping the knife as his fingers clawed desperately at Calder’s iron grip.
"You killed Elena," Calder hissed, his face inches from Emmett’s bulging eyes. "You faked that crash report seventeen years ago. You told Father she was dead so you could keep me isolated. You hunted a child."

"Calder... please..." Emmett choked out, his face turning mottled purple under the red flare light. "We’re... brothers... family..."
"You gave up family the second you pointed a gun at my daughter," Calder whispered.
