Chapter 6 - The Brother in the Shadows

Emmett looked up, flashing a predatory, boyish grin that sent chills through the room.

He was two years younger than Calder, leaner, with sharp features and cold, restless eyes. He wore an immaculate tailored three-piece suit, untouched by rain or gunpowder. Flanking the massive fireplace stood four men armed with suppressed automatic pistols, their expressions unreadable masks of violence.

"You're late, Calder," Emmett drawled, swirling the amber liquid in his crystal glass. "And you brought guests. How utterly sentimental of you."

Calder stepped forward, instantly shifting his massive body to screen Clara and Mara behind him. His hands rested loose at his sides, ready to strike, his expression carving into stone.

"Get out of my house, Emmett."

"Your house?" Emmett chuckled, setting the glass down on the table with a sharp clink. "Everything we own belongs to the family, brother. Father made that clear before he closed his eyes. But you... you got weak. You spent a decade playing legitimate businessman, writing checks to hospitals, pretending you didn't have harbor mud and blood under your fingernails."

Emmett’s gaze slid around Calder’s shoulder, locking onto the pale teenager. His smile stretched wider, venomous and cruel. "And look what crawled out of the past. Clara Vance. I must admit, I was furious when my men reported she slipped away at the docks. But finding out that your precious little secretary was the one who cracked my operator’s skull? That was pure poetry."

Mara stepped slightly to Calder's side, refusing to cower. "Your men are clumsy, Emmett. Just like you."

Emmett's eyes flashed with murderous irritation, but he forced a laugh. "Quiet, secretary. You’re lucky you aren't floating in the bay already. But don't worry, your turn is coming."

He looked back at Calder. "Here is how this night ends, brother. You sign over the operational control of the southern docks and the foreign shipping manifests to me. In exchange, I let you put this bastard girl on a private jet to Europe. She disappears forever. You keep your clean little real estate portfolio, and I run the real business the way Father intended."

"And if I refuse?" Calder asked, his voice deathly soft.

Emmett clicked his tongue, shaking his head in mock pity. "If you refuse, my men empty their magazines into this room. The girl dies. Miss Ellison dies. You take a bullet to the spine and watch them bleed out before I toss you off this sixty-story balcony. Greyhaven police will call it a tragic home invasion by rival dockworkers. The board will mourn you, and by tomorrow noon, I will be the sole executor of the Wynn estate."

Clara grabbed the back of Calder’s jacket with both hands, trembling violently. "Calder..." she whispered, calling him by his name for the very first time.

Calder felt the tiny, desperate tug on his coat. For sixteen years, he had lived as a hollow ghost, chained to an empire he despised, mourning a woman he thought he had failed. But looking at Clara, looking at the courage in Mara's wounded frame, something buried deep inside him roared to life.

He wasn't his father's puppet anymore. He was a father protecting his own blood.

"You always were an idiot, Emmett," Calder said calmly.

Emmett’s smile vanished. "Excuse me?"

"You think power is about fear and guns," Calder said, taking a slow step forward. "You forgot who hired every man guarding this building. You forgot who designed the security protocols for this tower."

Calder lifted his left hand and tapped a concealed control pad embedded directly into the side of the entrance column.

The entire penthouse plunged into pitch-black darkness.
