Chapter 3 - Ambush in the Corridor

The lockup corridor went dead silent. The faint murmur of police radios from the lobby suddenly vanished, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic thud of tactical boots against slick linoleum.

Calder stood up, towering over the bench. He instinctively placed himself between the doorway and the two women.

"Stay down," Calder commanded, his voice dropping into the terrifying cadence of an experienced combatant.

"Calder, your weapons are outside," Mara said, her eyes wide as she gripped Clara’s arm. "They took your gun at the security scanner."

"I don't need a gun for this corridor," he replied flatly.

The door swung open. It wasn't the tired booking sergeant. Two men in dark raincoats and heavy tactical vests stepped into the frame. They didn't wear badges. Their faces were obscured behind black neoprene masks, but Calder immediately recognized the distinct posture, the low center of gravity, and the suppressed submachine guns tucked under their coats. They were Emmett's private cleanup crew—mercenaries hired from the rust-belt docks to do what ordinary gangsters couldn't stomach.

The lead mercenary raised his suppressed barrel directly at Clara. "Step aside, Mr. Wynn. The board wants this resolved cleanly."

Calder didn't negotiate. He lunged forward before the mercenary could seat the weapon against his shoulder.

With brutal precision, Calder seized the barrel, twisting it violently upward. A muffled burst shredded the ceiling tiles, raining white plaster dust down upon them. Calder drove his right elbow into the man’s throat with the force of a hydraulic piston. Cartilage cracked. The mercenary wheezed, stumbling backward into the corridor. Calder wrenched the submachine gun from his grip, pivoted on his heel, and struck the second man across the temple with the heavy metal stock.

The second shooter hit the concrete floor hard, his weapon sliding across the wet tiles.

Down the hallway, alarms began to blare. A red emergency strobe spun across the walls, casting blood-colored shadows over the holding cells.

"The rear garage exit," Calder barked, grabbing Mara by the arm and pulling her to her feet. "Now!"

Mara didn't waste a second. Ignoring her bare feet and the pain radiating from her bruised ribs, she hauled Clara behind Calder. They burst into the central corridor. Smoke from the discharge lingered in the cold air. Near the booking counter, two uniform officers lay unconscious, zip-tied to the lobby chairs. Emmett’s men hadn't just infiltrated the precinct; they had executed a quiet coup of the entire night shift.

"Where is Owen?" Mara shouted over the wailing siren.

"He's parked in the alley behind the evidence bay," Calder said, leading them through the swinging metal doors into the underground sally port.

Suddenly, tires screeched across the wet asphalt outside. A heavy black SUV smashed through the perimeter gate of the police garage, its headlights blinding them. The passenger window rolled down, and a figure leaned out, raising an automatic rifle.

"Get down!" Calder roared, tackling both Mara and Clara behind a reinforced concrete pillar.

A deafening barrage of gunfire chipped away at the concrete, showering them with razor-sharp stone shards. Clara screamed, burying her face into Mara’s bloodstained blouse. Mara wrapped herself entirely around the girl, whispering fierce, desperate reassurances into her hair.

Calder leaned out from the pillar, leveled the captured submachine gun, and fired two controlled bursts into the SUV’s front tires and radiator. The vehicle shrieked, skidding sideways across the slick pavement before slamming into a parked cruiser.

From the opposite end of the alley, a deep engine roared. A heavy black armored sedan surged into view, ramming the crippled SUV out of the path.

The rear door clicked open. Owen Mercer leaned over the steering wheel, his face pale beneath the dash lights. "Boss! Get in! The whole harbor district is mobilizing!"

Calder shoved Mara and Clara onto the leather back seat before diving in behind them. "Drive, Owen. Take us to the Vault."
