Chapter 6 - The Law Steps In

By that evening, the video of my speech had racked up over three million views across social media platforms. Local news outlets were parked outside our gated community, their broadcast vans lining the street with cameras trained on our front driveway.

Inside the house, the atmosphere was suffocating. Chloe had locked herself in her bedroom, refusing to speak or eat. The relentless pinging of her phone was audible through the thick wooden door—notifications of lost brand sponsorships, revoked invitations to elite sororities, and endless messages of condemnation from peers she had once ruled over.

Downstairs, the front doorbell rang sharply. My father, his eyes bloodshot and hands shaking, answered it.

Standing on the front porch was not a reporter, but Arthur Vance, the senior managing partner of my grandfather’s estate law firm, accompanied by a woman with a sleek leather briefcase: Detective Morris from the county fraud division.

"Richard," Arthur Vance said coldly, bypassing my father without waiting for an invitation. "We’ve seen the viral footage. We also received an anonymous delivery of the forged competency petition you filed yesterday morning."

My father's voice cracked. "Arthur, this is a private family misunderstanding. We were going to amend the filing on Monday—"

"Save it for the disciplinary board, Richard," Arthur cut in sharply. "You attempted to fraudulently declare a legally competent adult incapacitated to circumvent the explicit stipulations of Edward Harrison's testamentary trust. That is a direct breach of fiduciary duty, and potentially criminal fraud."

Detective Morris stepped forward, pulling a legal folder from her bag. "Mr. Harrison, we have opened a formal preliminary investigation into the misappropriation of estate assets and the falsification of medical affidavits. I strongly advise you to retain independent counsel immediately."

I stood at the top of the sweeping curved staircase, listening to every word. For the first time in my life, the massive house didn't feel like a prison. It felt like an old structure whose rotten walls were finally being cleared away by the light of day.

Arthur looked up and caught my eye. His stern expression softened into genuine warmth and respect.

"Maya," he called out gently. "Your grandfather left instructions that if any interference occurred, the trust was to be placed under independent judicial receivership with you as the sole administrative director upon your eighteenth birthday. You are officially free."
