Chapter 4 - The Final Betrayal

The atmosphere had transformed from a lighthearted summer bash into an open-air courtroom. Friends of Chloe who had arrived to celebrate her were now staring at her with cold, unyielding judgment. The whispers were growing louder, carrying through the warm breeze.

"Is that true, Chloe?" Amber demanded, stepping forward from the poolside group. Her voice was sharp, cutting through the murmurs. "You told all of us she was just a bitter, lazy shut-in who hated your success. You told us she stayed inside because she was crazy!"

Chloe didn't look up. Her silence was louder than any defense she could have offered.

"That wasn't even the worst of it," I said, raising the microphone one last time. "There is one more truth that needs to be spoken today. Because this isn't just about an old fire. It’s about what happened three weeks ago."

My father's head snapped up. His eyes widened in pure, unadulterated terror. "Maya, please! Not that! Don't do this!" he shouted, stumbling toward the edge of the patio.

"Let her speak!" a boy from the varsity track team yelled back at my father, blocking his path. "Let her talk, Mr. Harrison!"

I looked directly at my father. "Three weeks ago, our grandfather's estate trust was finally unsealed for our eighteenth birthday. Grandpa left behind a two-million-dollar educational and medical fund specifically earmarked for the granddaughter who bore the burden of that fire. He knew the truth before he passed away. He left that money to ensure I would never have to worry about my medical treatments, my future skin reconstruction, or my university tuition."

The crowd gasped collectively.

"When my parents received the legal notice," I revealed, my voice steady despite the ache in my throat, "they realized that if the trust were executed as written, the executor would require an official medical examination to confirm the beneficiary. The entire town would find out why the trust existed. So yesterday morning, my father went to the probate attorney and filed an emergency petition, declaring me mentally unfit to manage the trust due to severe social anxiety and agoraphobia."

Disgusted cries broke out among the guests.

"They planned to transfer the full trust into Chloe’s name, promising that she would 'take care of me' for the rest of my life in a private facility out of state. And Chloe agreed to it. She signed the preliminary co-beneficiary acceptance form yesterday afternoon."

I dropped my hands to my sides, the neon-pink bikini glowing beneath the hot sun, framing the map of my survival.

"You didn't just try to humiliate me today, Chloe," I whispered. "You tried to erase me completely."
