Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

An hour later, the sun was casting long, golden rays through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our kitchen.

Marcus had already drafted the civil restitution lien to recover the sixty-four thousand dollars from Derek’s remaining catering assets.

The two scam victims had their deposits fully reimbursed through our firm’s emergency pro bono fund, leaving them safe and housed in nearby suites.

Upstairs, the soft sound of giggles echoed down the hallway as Sophie and Lily finished their movie and ran into the kitchen.

"Mommy! Is the loud lady gone?" Sophie asked, wrapping her little arms around my waist.

"She's gone, sweetie," I smiled, lifting Lily onto my hip while Daniel wrapped his strong arms around all three of us.

"Nobody is ever taking your playroom, and nobody is ever making you feel small in your own home."

Daniel began unpacking the groceries we had abandoned on the counter, humming a cheerful tune as he chopped fresh vegetables for dinner.

The smell of garlic, olive oil, and roasting chicken soon filled the spacious kitchen, replacing the bitter chill of Eleanor's entitlement.

For ten years, I had carried the invisible scar of being the neglected daughter, the girl whose dreams were traded away for a brother's ego.

Yet as I looked around at the magnificent home I had earned with my own sweat, intellect, and resilience, the last phantom ache vanished.

I sat at the marble island beside my husband and daughters, watching Sophie draw a colorful picture of our family under a giant rainbow.

There were no conditional expectations here, no stolen inheritances, and no manipulative debts waiting to be paid.

I picked up my wineglass, clinked it gently against Daniel’s, and listened to the sweetest music in the world: the sound of an honest, unbreakable home.
