Chapter 5 - The Morning Reckoning

By seven o’clock the following morning, the crisp autumn chill hung heavily over the glass facade of St. Catherine Medical Center. The entrance was quiet, save for the hum of street sweepers and the occasional arrival of morning shift nurses clutching insulated coffee mugs.
I walked through the executive entrance wearing a tailored charcoal wool coat, flanked by Marcus Kane, my chief legal counsel, and Dr. Robert Mercer, the newly appointed interim Chief Medical Officer. Gone were the faded oversized scrubs and the rubber clogs I had worn while inspecting the facility over the past eight weeks.
As we stepped into the grand marble atrium, Ethan was already waiting by the elevators.
He looked as though he hadn't slept a wink. His dress shirt was rumpled beneath his white doctor’s coat, his tie crooked, dark purple bags sagging beneath his eyes. When he saw me walking alongside the board’s top legal team, his knees visibly buckled.
""Claire—Ms. Vance,"" he corrected himself instantly, stepping forward, his hands raised in a pleading gesture. ""Please. I waited here since five in the morning. Give me five minutes in private. Just five minutes.""
""Dr. Cole,"" Marcus Kane interjected, stepping between Ethan and myself with an authoritative presence that stopped the surgeon in his tracks. ""You have been formally served with an emergency administrative suspension pending an investigation by the state licensing bureau and federal authorities. You are barred from accessing surgical suites, patient records, and hospital property as of six o'clock this morning.""
""I have a scheduled knee replacement in thirty minutes!"" Ethan argued desperately, his voice cracking with panic. ""The patient is prepped! You can't just cancel a surgery!""
""Dr. Mercer has already reassigned your patient to Dr. Wallace,"" I said, looking directly into his exhausted eyes. ""The patient will receive medical-grade implants vetted by our verified suppliers, not the surplus inventory you purchased through Apex Orthopedics.""
Ethan swallowed hard, glancing around the lobby. Several nurses and orderlies from the surgical floor were watching the scene unfold from behind the reception desk. Among them was Maria, the veteran surgical nurse Ethan had attempted to fire two weeks prior to cover his own negligence.
Maria stepped forward, her eyes wide as she realized the woman who had helped her mop up a spilled chemical drum in the hallway ten days ago was currently issuing orders to the entire hospital leadership.
""Ms. Vance?"" Maria asked, her voice cautious.
I turned to her and smiled gently. ""Good morning, Maria. The formal reprimand in your HR file has been completely expunged this morning. You’re also being appointed as the head of the hospital’s sterile supply oversight committee, effective immediately, with a twenty-five percent raise.""
Tears welled in Maria’s eyes. She glanced at Ethan, whose face had gone completely pale, before turning back to me with a deep nod of gratitude. ""Thank you, ma'am. Thank you so much.""
""Ethan,"" I continued, turning back to my disgraced brother-in-law. ""Security will escort you to your locker to collect your personal belongings. Any attempt to touch digital patient files will be treated as felony evidence tampering.""

""Vanessa is losing her mind at home,"" Ethan muttered, his voice barely audible above the hum of the lobby heaters. ""The banks called her this morning about our line of credit. They froze the escrow account on our new house. She’s threatening to divorce me, Claire. Is this what you wanted? To destroy my marriage?""
""You destroyed your marriage the moment you prioritized fraud over your oath as a physician,"" I replied calmly. ""You made your bed, Ethan. Now you have to lie in it.""
