Chapter 4 - The Price Of Arrogance

Ethan flinched as I stepped beside him, ducking his head instinctively as if I were about to strike him. Instead, I tucked the crisp fifty-dollar bill neatly into the breast pocket of his tailored Italian sports jacket.
""Keep it, Ethan,"" I murmured softly. ""You’re going to need every dollar you can find once the federal licensing board opens its investigation tomorrow morning.""
Vanessa shrieked, springing out of her seat. ""You wouldn't! Claire, he’s your brother-in-law! If you destroy his medical license, our lives are over! We just closed on the five-million-dollar house in the estates! The mortgage is due in two weeks!""
""Then you should have checked whether your husband was financing that mortgage with kickbacks from black-market medical device brokers,"" I replied without blinking. ""At seven o'clock tomorrow morning, a forensic team from the state medical board and federal auditors will be arriving at St. Catherine. They have full access to Ethan’s surgical logs, inventory receipts, and the private storage unit under Apex Orthopedics.""
Ethan grabbed my wrist. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with terror. ""Claire, wait. Listen to me. Please. I was wrong. I was stupid. I let Vanessa’s spending get out of hand, and I took shortcuts. The hospital was cutting physician bonuses, and I had overhead—I have debt from Johns Hopkins! If you report this, I’m going to prison! I’ll lose everything!""
""Let go of my wrist, Dr. Cole,"" I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
He dropped his hand instantly, breathing like a cornered animal.
""You didn't care about rules when you compromised patient safety by ordering second-rate prosthetic joints through your shell company,"" I said. ""Two elderly patients suffered post-op joint failures last month because the titanium batches you authorized weren't medical-grade. You blamed the nursing staff and the sterile processing technicians. You almost ruined the career of a nurse named Maria—a mother of three—claiming she contaminated the surgical field, just so nobody would inspect the cheap metal you forced into those patients' hips.""
Grandma’s breath caught. ""Is that true, Ethan?""
Ethan couldn't answer. He slumped forward, burying his face in his trembling hands, a broken shell of the arrogant surgeon who had entered the house two hours earlier boasting about his country club tee times.
My father slowly sank back into his chair. The authoritarian pride had drained completely from his face, replaced by the hollow, sunken look of an old man realizing every foundation he built his life upon was manufactured sand.
""Claire,"" Dad croaked, unable to meet my eyes. ""What are you going to do to us?""
""To you?"" I picked up my wine glass and took a slow, deliberate sip. ""Nothing illegal. Nothing malicious. But the free ride ends tonight. The property deed to this house will be transferred to a property management firm on Monday. You and Mom will pay fair market rent, or you can downsize to a two-bedroom condo within thirty days. The country club dues are cancelled effective midnight. And Ethan will face the justice system exactly like any other citizen who steals and endangers lives.""

""You're a monster!"" Vanessa screamed, beating her fists against the table. ""You’re ruining this family out of pure jealousy because nobody loved you as much as they loved me!""
""Loved you?"" Grandma Evelyn stood tall, looking at Vanessa with cold pity. ""They didn't love you, child. They loved your vanity. They used you as an ornament to convince their neighbors they were successful. If they loved you, your mother would have taught you how to earn a dollar instead of teaching you how to step on your sister’s throat to feel tall.""
