Chapter 3 - The Broken Pedestal

Vanessa’s tears finally spilled over, smearing her expensive eyeliner. She turned on her husband, her voice rising to a shrill, hysterical pitch. ""Ethan, tell her she’s lying! Tell everyone she made this up to get back at us! Tell them!""

Ethan didn't look at his wife. He kept his eyes glued to the TV screen, where the invoice numbers from Apex Orthopedics were clearly matched against St. Catherine’s serial logs. Every document bore his digital signature.

""It’s... it’s an administrative misunderstanding,"" Ethan whispered, his hands trembling so violently he had to press them flat against the dining table. ""Claire, let’s talk about this privately. We’re family. There’s no need to parade internal hospital audits at a holiday dinner.""

""When did we become family, Ethan?"" I asked, tilting my head. ""Was it when you asked Vanessa if she could lend you money to pay off your luxury car leases? Or was it five minutes ago, when you offered to pull strings with the janitorial union so I could get dental care?""

Dad bolted to his feet, knocking his silver napkin ring onto the carpet. ""That is enough, Claire! I don't care how much money you have, you will not come into my house and interrogate my guests like a criminal prosecutor! I am the head of this family, and I demand you shut that television off!""

Grandma Evelyn let out a dry, rattling laugh. ""Your house, Richard? Shall we pull up the deed on that screen next?""

Dad froze mid-shout. His jaw sagged.

""What deed?"" Vanessa demanded, looking wildly between our parents. ""Dad bought this place in 2021 when he sold his logistics firm!""

""Your father went bankrupt in 2020 when his logistics firm collapsed under bad debt,"" Grandma stated coldly. ""The bank was seventy-two hours away from foreclosing on this very house. Eleanor came crying to me, and I sent her to the only person with the cash reserves to bail them out without destroying their social standing. Claire bought the note from the bank. Claire pays the property taxes. Claire covers the gardener, the pool maintenance, and the private country club membership your father flaunts around town. This house belongs to Claire Vance. If she wanted to, she could have local deputies remove your luggage to the curb before the pumpkin pie is served.""

The silence in the dining room became absolute.

Aunt Sarah looked at my mother with an expression of sheer disgust. ""Eleanor... you told us Richard took early retirement to focus on his golf game. You told us you sent Claire money every month to keep her from being evicted from a studio apartment!""

""I... I wanted to protect her pride!"" Mom wept, burying her face in a cloth napkin. ""A woman shouldn't be so cold, so corporate! Vanessa has a marriage! Vanessa has a home! Claire lives like a phantom, never dating, never giving me grandchildren! She works in shadows! How was I supposed to explain to our bridge club that my youngest daughter spends her time buying distressed debt instead of starting a family?""

""By telling the truth,"" Grandma Evelyn snapped. ""By saying your daughter is a brilliant businesswoman who saved your roof from falling over your head. But you couldn't do that, could you? Because if Claire was the provider, you couldn't treat her like the family scapegoat anymore.""

I picked up the fifty-dollar bill Dad had thrown beside my plate. I stood up, walked around the table, and stopped behind Ethan’s chair.
