Chapter 7 - A Mother’s Homecoming

While my family was tearing itself apart on the docks of Grand Cayman, Lulu and I were boarding a quiet, comfortable American Airlines flight out of Cancun back to Charlotte.

The Quintana Roo police and the local consulate had been extraordinary. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the tourist bureau had arranged an expedited police escort to the airport, ensuring Lulu remained calm and stress-free. Throughout the two-and-a-half-hour flight, Lulu rested her head on my shoulder, coloring in a sketchbook the flight attendants had gifted her. The color had fully returned to her cheeks, and her gentle, sweet smile had returned.

""Mom?"" she asked quietly as the plane began its descent through the clouds over the lush green canopy of North Carolina. ""Are we ever going to see Grandma and Aunt Desiree again?""

I wrapped my arm securely around her shoulders, kissing the top of her hair. ""No, baby. We’re not. We are done with people who treat your life like an inconvenience. From now on, our family is only made of people who protect you.""

A profound sense of relief washed over Lulu’s face. She didn't cry. She didn't plead for family unity. She simply exhaled a breath she seemed to have been holding for years, whispering, ""Thank you.""

When we landed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, I didn't take a taxi home. Instead, we were met at the baggage claim by my attorney, Sarah Vance, a fierce, razor-sharp family and criminal litigation specialist who had been an old friend of mine since college.

""How is she doing?"" Sarah asked softly, crouching down to give Lulu a warm hug before handing her a cup of hot chocolate.

""She’s resilient,"" I said, looking down at my daughter with immense pride. ""She’s stronger than anyone in that family.""

Sarah turned to me, her expression turning deadly serious as she pulled a thick manila folder from her leather briefcase. ""Holly, the cruise ship footage and the Cozumel municipal tapes you sent have completely changed the landscape. The Mecklenburg County District Attorney's office has already been briefed, along with the federal authorities. Because the victim is an American minor, the offense involved intentional deprivation of critical medical care in a foreign territory, and the suspects re-entered American jurisdiction through federal ports, the legal fallout is going to be massive.""

""What’s happening with my parents?""

Sarah permitted herself a small, grim smile. ""Your father arrived on a flight through Miami three hours ago. He went straight to my associate’s office. Holly, he is completely broken, but he did the right thing. He handed over copies of their family trust documents, their shared financial assets, and gave a sworn deposition corroborating that Evelyn knowingly took the medicine and refused to allow anyone to look for Lulu.""

""And Mom and Desiree?""

""They had to borrow emergency cash from Desiree’s husband, who had to take out a high-interest payday title loan on his truck to get them budget flights back through Atlanta. They are scheduled to touch down in Charlotte at four-thirty this afternoon.""

I looked at my watch. It was 2:15 p.m.

""Sarah,"" I said quietly, ""I want full legal protection. I want an emergency restraining order granted before they even step through their front doors.""

May you like

""Already filed, stamped, and signed by a Mecklenburg County judge an hour ago,"" Sarah replied, tapping the manila folder. ""Fifty-B domestic violence and child protection restraining order. Evelyn and Desiree are barred from coming within five hundred feet of you, Lulu, your home, your hospital, and Lulu's school. If they so much as send a text message through a third party, they will be arrested immediately.""

""Good,"" I said, taking Lulu’s hand. ""Now let's go home and change the locks.""
