Chapter 5 - The Ship Turns Cold

Twelve hundred miles away, cutting through the dark waters toward Grand Cayman, the cruise ship’s celebratory atmosphere had completely deteriorated for the Ferrante family.
Desiree was awoken at 7:00 a.m. by a furious banging on the door of her stateroom. When she opened it, groggy and irritated, two uniformed security officers and the ship’s Guest Operations Manager were standing in the carpeted hallway.
""Mrs. Miller?"" the manager asked, holding a digital tablet. ""We need you and your mother, Mrs. Evelyn Ferrante, to accompany us to the Chief of Security’s office immediately.""
""Excuse me? Do you know what time it is?"" Desiree sneered, pulling her silk robe around herself. ""My children are sleeping. Whatever billing mistake you people made can wait until brunch.""
""This is not a billing inquiry, ma'am,"" the officer stated, his voice devoid of warmth. ""This is an active legal and maritime security matter. If you do not comply voluntarily, we will have security personnel escort you.""
Ten minutes later, Desiree and my mother were seated in a stark, windowless administrative conference room on Deck 3. My father, Richard, sat between them, his face pale and bewildered. Dad was a quiet, retired civil engineer who had spent forty-five years letting my mother run his life, constantly enabling her toxic behavior just to avoid conflict. He had genuinely believed my mother’s story that Lulu had simply gotten lost and that I had stayed behind to collect her for a flight home.
""What is the meaning of this outrage?"" Evelyn demanded, slamming her manicured hand onto the laminate conference table. ""I am an elite loyalty member on this cruise line! We demand to speak to the Captain! My daughter Holly is clearly having a psychological breakdown and feeding you ridiculous stories!""
The Chief of Security, an imposing former Royal Navy officer named Commander Harris, didn't flinch. He slowly turned a large flat-screen monitor mounted on the wall toward them.
""Mrs. Ferrante,"" Commander Harris said coldly. ""At two hundred hours this morning, corporate maritime counsel in Miami received an official transmission from the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s office, along with digital evidence submitted by your daughter, Holly Ferrante.""
He pressed play on the remote.
On the screen, in full high-definition clarity, Evelyn watched herself scream at Lulu by the fountain, rip the life-saving medicine from the trembling girl's grip, and casually stride away toward the port while Lulu slumped against the stone basin.
My father’s breath caught in his throat. He stared at the screen, his mouth falling open in horror. ""Evelyn... what did you do?""
""Richard, don't look at that! It's taken out of context!"" Evelyn shrieked, her face turning crimson. ""She was misbehaving! She was throwing a fit!""
""You told me she wandered off!"" Richard yelled, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing heartbreak that Desiree had never heard from him before. ""You told me you turned around in the market and she was gone! You looked me in the eye on the gangway and swore you searched the entire shopping mall for her!""
""Dad, calm down, she's exaggerating!"" Desiree intervened, panic creeping into her voice. ""Lulu is fine! Holly is just doing this to punish us because she's jealous of my boys!""
Commander Harris leaned forward, resting his forearms heavily on the table. ""I suggest you close your mouth, Mrs. Miller. Because of this footage, the Mexican federal authorities have issued an active provisional warrant for child endangerment and criminal abandonment against both of you. Furthermore, pursuant to the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act and our corporate terms of carriage, your behavior constitutes a severe threat to guest safety.""
""You can't do anything to us while we're on this ship!"" Evelyn spat, trying desperately to reassert dominance. ""We are American citizens in international waters!""
""You are correct that we cannot arrest you while at sea,"" Commander Harris replied calmly. ""However, the Captain has officially revoked your passenger contracts. When this vessel docks at our next port of call in George Town, Grand Cayman at noon, you will be escorted down the gangway by security. Your luggage will be brought to the pier. You will not be permitted to re-board. You are permanently banned from sailing on any vessel under our corporate umbrella for life.""
May you like
""You're throwing us off the ship?"" Desiree shrieked, jumping to her feet. ""In the Cayman Islands? What about our flights? What about the thousands of dollars we paid for this trip?""
""Your travel arrangements are your own responsibility,"" Harris replied stone-cold. ""And according to guest services, your secondary credit cards were declined this morning. You currently owe the ship three thousand four hundred dollars in accumulated dining and retail charges. You will settle that account before your passports are returned.""
