Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in Court

The Franklin County Courthouse was crowded with local reporters when I arrived. Word of the ""Columbus Attic Heat Trap Case"" had leaked to local news outlets, sparking immense public outrage across Ohio. People held signs outside demanding maximum sentences for Linda and Ashley, horrified by the cruelty inflicted upon a week-old infant.

I walked into the courtroom wearing my clean suit, my head held high. On the defense side of the room sat Linda and Ashley, both clad in orange prison jumpsuits and heavy wrist chains. Linda's hair was unwashed, her face pale and sunken without her makeup, but the defiant, venomous arrogance in her eyes hadn't faded. When she saw me walk in, she leaned toward her public defender, whispering furiously while pointing an accusatory finger in my direction.

Judge Patricia Holloway, a seasoned magistrate known for her zero-tolerance policy on domestic abuse, banged her gavel to silence the room. ""We are here for the bail review and formal arraignment of Linda Miller and Ashley Miller on charges of attempted aggravated murder, kidnapping, and first-degree child endangerment.""

The assistant district attorney, a sharp woman named Sarah Jenkins, stepped forward. ""Your Honor, the state requests no bail. The defendants deliberately orchestrated an employment crisis to remove the victim's husband, barricaded a postpartum woman and a seven-day-old infant in an unventilated room, taped over air conditioning vents, and laced the infant’s formula with sedatives to prevent discovery. This was premeditated, financially motivated, and monstrous.""

Linda suddenly jumped up from her wooden chair, rattling her chains violently despite her attorney’s desperate attempts to pull her down. ""Your Honor! This is an outrage!"" she screamed, her shrill voice echoing off the high mahogany ceiling. ""Ethan is my son! I raised him with my own bare hands! He owed me a home! That ungrateful, pathetic little girl brainwashed him into turning his back on his own flesh and blood! I was teaching her how to be a real mother! She didn't deserve that baby, and she didn't deserve my son!""

Judge Holloway glared down from the bench with absolute fury. ""Restrain the defendant immediately! One more outburst, Mrs. Miller, and I will have you gagged for the remainder of this proceeding.""

Two bailiffs forced Linda back into her seat. Judge Holloway adjusted her glasses and stared down at the two women with utter revulsion. ""I have reviewed the evidence, including the text logs, the sealed vents, and the toxicological reports from Columbus Children’s Hospital. The cruelty demonstrated by the defendants is beyond the bounds of civilized humanity. Bail is denied for both defendants. You will remain in custody at the Franklin County Corrections Center pending trial.""

As the guards pulled Linda toward the side holding cell, she locked eyes with me, screaming curses and threats, demanding that I fire the lawyer and drop the charges. I didn't flinch. I didn't shout back. I simply looked at her with total indifference—the same way one looks at a venomous snake safely locked behind glass. She was no longer my mother; she was a dangerous stranger who had tried to murder my family.
