Chapter 6 - The Sister’s Confession

Within six hours of their arrest, the united front between Linda and Ashley cracked completely under the weight of incoming federal and state charges. When faced with the text logs and the forensic toxicology reports showing lethal chemical binders in the baby formula, Ashley shattered like cheap glass in the interrogation room.
Detective Miller permitted me to watch the recorded interrogation footage from behind the one-way glass in the precinct's observation room. Ashley sat huddled in a gray county jail jumpsuit, mascara smeared across her blotchy cheeks, hyperventilating as the female interrogator laid out the twenty-year minimum sentencing guidelines.
""It was Mom's idea! I swear to God, it was all Mom!"" Ashley shrieked, slamming her handcuffed wrists against the metal table. ""She owed thirty thousand dollars to high-interest loan sharks in Cleveland! They were threatening to break her legs! When Ethan announced Emily was pregnant, Mom lost her mind because she knew Ethan wouldn't bail her out anymore! She told me that Emily was weak and that nobody would question a postpartum complication! She said mothers die from infections all the time!""
The interrogator leaned forward, her voice ice-cold. ""Who crushed the pills into the infant formula, Ashley? Who put the Epsom salts in the powder?""
Ashley buried her face in her hands, sobbing hysterically. ""Mom told me it was just to make the baby sleep so we could watch movies! But she was the one who bought the hook for the door! She bought it at the hardware store two days before Ethan even left for his business trip! She planned it the moment Ethan mentioned his company had an inventory emergency!""
My stomach dropped into a bottomless void. My mother had known about my business trip before I even told her.
I pulled out my phone and dialed my warehouse general manager, Dave. ""Dave,"" I said, my voice dangerously steady. ""Who called in the paperwork discrepancies that forced me to drive to Cleveland last week?""
Dave hesitated on the other end. ""Ethan? What's going on? You haven't checked in. Look, an anonymous tip came into corporate HR claiming you were forging shipping manifests. The tipster provided specific internal document numbers. We had to do an immediate audit to clear your name. Why?""
""What phone number did the tip come from, Dave?""
There was a typing pause on the other line. ""Area code 614... ending in 8842.""

My mother's personal cell phone number.
She had fabricated the corporate complaint against me, feeding internal invoice numbers she found while snooping through my home office desk, specifically to orchestrate an artificial crisis that would force me hundreds of miles away. She created the stage, set the trap, and left my wife and newborn son to slowly perish in a suffocating chamber. The sheer sociopathic calculation of it left me shaking with a fury so violent I could taste iron in my mouth.
