Chapter 1 - The Trap Behind Closed Doors

The stench of stagnant sweat, spoiled formula, and scorching human misery hit my throat like pure poison. I lunged across the floor toward the bed where Emily lay motionless. Her skin was a frightening shade of dull ash, clammy and soaked in cold sweat, yet her forehead burned against my trembling palm like hot asphalt. Her breathing came in shallow, ragged rasps. Beside her, tucked beneath an absurd pile of suffocating wool blankets, lay seven-day-old Noah. His face was mottled dark purple, his sunken soft spot pulsing violently, his tiny lips caked in chalky, dry crust. When I scooped him into my arms, his frail body felt like a bag of heated coals. He didn't even have the energy left to wail; he only let out a tiny, whistling gasp that sounded like a dying bird.

Behind me, the door creaked wide. My mother, Linda, stood in the frame holding a cup of instant coffee, her expression shifting from mild surprise to sour annoyance. ""Ethan, don't you dare work yourself into a frenzy,"" she said, her voice dripping with dismissive contempt. ""Babies get fussy, and Emily has been acting like a dramatic teenager since you walked out that door. She refused to get out of bed to wash dishes or clean up after dinner. I had to pile those blankets on the boy because he wouldn't stop shaking. If you spoil them now, they’ll walk all over you.""

""Get out of my way,"" I snarled, a guttural sound tearing from my chest that made my mother step back in shock.

Ashley appeared behind her, scrolling carelessly on her phone, chewing gum with a wet, rhythmic smack. ""Seriously, bro? We basically gave up our entire weekend to babysit your lazy wife while she slept all day. You owe us gas money and takeout, by the way.""

I didn't waste another breath. Clutched against my chest in his thin cotton onesie, Noah barely weighed anything at all. With my free arm, I hoisted Emily upright. Her head lolled heavily onto my shoulder, her cracked lips parting to let out a weak whimper. ""Ethan... water... please, so cold..."" she muttered incoherently. I half-dragged, half-carried her out into the humid morning air, kicking the screen door wide open. Behind me, my mother shouted about my disrespect, but their voices blurred into static behind the roaring rush of blood in my ears. I laid Emily across the backseat of my truck, buckled Noah's infant seat securely into place, and slammed my foot onto the accelerator, running red lights through the Columbus morning haze until tires shrieked against the emergency room drop-off curb.

Two triage nurses rushed through the automatic double doors with a stretcher the moment they saw my frantic waving. An older doctor with silver hair and sharp hazel eyes named Dr. Vance sprinted toward us, throwing Noah's blanket back before pressing a thermometer to the baby's ear. The machine beeped, flashing bright scarlet: 104.8°F. Dr. Vance’s face turned paper-white, all color draining from his cheeks in an instant. He grabbed a penlight, peeling back Noah’s tiny eyelids, then reached down to press firmly on Emily’s abdomen, which was rock-hard and burning through her fabric. Emily let out an agonizing, guttural scream of pure delirium before losing consciousness entirely.

Dr. Vance spun around to the charge nurse, his voice trembling with furious urgency. ""Trauma room one for the neonate! Severe hyperthermia, acute dehydration, possible systemic septic shock! Get an ice bath protocol and pediatric IV lines running right now! Page OB-GYN for the mother—she’s in septic shock from an untreated postpartum uterine infection!"" Then he gripped my collar with astonishing force, staring straight into my eyes. ""Son, tell me the absolute truth. Did someone lock them in a furnace? Because if you brought them from a residential home, you need to call the Columbus Police Department right this second. This isn't poor parenting. This is criminal neglect and attempted murder.""
