Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Mask

At eight o’clock that morning, the Bennett family held an impromptu press briefing outside their sprawling estate in the gated enclave of Highland Oaks. Marcus had hooked a laptop to the recovery room monitor, allowing Julian, Martha, and me to watch the live local news broadcast in real time.

Paul stood at the ornate wrought-iron gates, dressed in a tailored charcoal wool sweater that made him look like a grieving, devoted husband. Diane was standing just behind him, a white silk scarf draped tastefully over her shoulders, dabbing at dry eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief. Beside them stood Arthur Bennett, his silver hair neatly parted, projecting the calm authority of an old-money patriarch under sudden tragedy.

""We are devastated,"" Paul spoke into the cluster of microphones thrust over the gate. His voice trembled with a theatrical tremor that made my blood run cold. ""Clara has been battling severe, undisclosed postpartum depression and vocational burnout. Last night, after a routine family dinner, she became disoriented and erratic. When my mother attempted to calm her down, Clara lashed out, injuring herself and fleeing into the darkness. Clara, darling... if you’re listening to this, please come home. We love you. We have doctors waiting. Nobody is angry with you.""

""The sociopathic precision is breathtaking,"" Julian muttered, crossing his arms and shaking his head. ""Look at Diane’s hands. No bruises, no shaking. She looks like she’s posing for an upscale charity gala.""

""Watch Arthur,"" I murmured, leaning toward the screen. ""Look at his left pocket. He’s holding his secure phone. He isn't worried about my safety; he’s calculating how many news cycles this will buy before the quarterly audit deadline.""

On screen, a reporter shouted, ""Mr. Bennett, neighbors reported hearing loud shouting and crashing sounds around nine o'clock! Did emergency services respond?""

Arthur smoothly stepped forward, gently nudging his son back with an authoritative hand. ""Our family values privacy during medical crises. We contacted our personal family physician and Lieutenant Miller immediately. We ask that our neighbors respect our family’s grief as search and rescue teams canvas the nearby nature reserve. Clara is fragile, and our only priority is bringing her home safely.""

The camera cut away to the anchor in the studio, speculating about the pressures facing young professional women in high-finance careers.

""They're framing the entire narrative,"" Martha said, her voice shaking with rage as she poured more chamomile tea. ""They're turning you into a lunatic so that when you finally do speak, everyone assumes it’s the ramblings of a broken mind.""

""That only works if Clara plays defense,"" Marcus said, stepping back into the room with a sheaf of official papers bearing gold state seals. ""Arthur Bennett just committed wire fraud on television by lying about the nature of the incident to cover up an ongoing criminal enterprise. Clara, while Paul was crying on camera, my team executed an emergency seal on Bennett Logistics’ central server farm in downtown Metro. Under the Whistleblower Protection Act, your testimony and the data on that drive gave us probable cause to freeze every corporate asset connected to Vanderbilt Holdings.""

""What about the house?"" I asked. ""The rolling pin is still there. The blood on the kitchen grout is still there.""

""They haven't cleaned it yet,"" Marcus smiled grimly. ""Because they think you crawled off into the woods to die or hide in shame. Lieutenant Miller gave Arthur his personal word that no forensics team would set foot inside that house without a twenty-four-hour notice. Arthur thinks he owns the law.""

Marcus pulled a federal warrant from his leather folder. ""He owns the local precinct. He doesn't own the Department of Justice. Clara, are you ready to go home?""

I looked down at the heavy black cast encasing my leg, then back up at Marcus. The fear that had kept me pinned to the kitchen floor twelve hours ago was entirely gone, replaced by an icy, incandescent resolve. ""Get me a wheelchair, Marcus. I want to be in the front row when you break down their door.""
