Chapter 3 - The Cold War at Sunrise

By five in the morning, my leg was secured in a rigid, charcoal-colored fiberglass splint, numbed by a long-acting nerve block that kept the worst of the throbbing at bay. Julian had moved me to a secure recovery suite on the top floor of his clinic, a room with blacked-out blinds and a heavy reinforced door. Sitting across from my bed was Detective Marcus Cole.

Marcus looked like he lived on black coffee and stubborn resolve. He wore an unwrinkled dark suit, a five o’clock shadow, and eyes that missed absolutely nothing. On the table between us lay the forensic file Julian had compiled, alongside the encrypted thumb drive I had pulled from my pocket.

""Your father-in-law has already initiated damage control,"" Marcus said, scrolling through an encrypted tablet. ""At 4:15 AM, Paul Bennett called the local precinct dispatch directly. He spoke to Lieutenant Miller—one of his father’s golfing buddies. Paul filed a 'Missing and Endangered Person' report for you, Clara.""

A bitter laugh escaped my dry throat. ""Let me guess what he told them.""

""He claimed his beloved wife suffered an acute mental health breakdown following work-related stress,"" Marcus recited, his tone flat and sarcastic. ""He told Miller you became violent, smashed several kitchen appliances, assaulted your mother-in-law with culinary tools, and fled into the storm on foot in a manic state. He even claimed you were barefoot and possibly suicidal, urging patrol cars to detain you quietly for an emergency psychiatric hold.""

""They're going to put me in a private facility,"" I whispered, the chill creeping back into my veins. ""If they get me committed under state statute for seventy-two hours, Paul gets power of attorney. He signs the audit papers in my name, and by the time I get out, I have a documented history of psychotic violence. No court would believe my story over theirs.""

""They would have gotten away with it, too,"" Marcus said, tapping the edge of the forensic folder. ""If you had gone to the county hospital, Miller’s deputies would have intercepted you at triage. But you came here. And you brought this."" He held up the small black thumb drive. ""Tell me what’s on this drive, Clara.""

""Bennett Logistics has held the municipal port shipping contract for eight years,"" I explained, leaning forward against the adjustable bed frame. ""Paul’s father claims the company operates on a four-percent margin, which allows them to claim heavy tax exemptions and qualify for state emergency infrastructure grants. But three months ago, I was asked to migrate their legacy accounting software. I found an unlinked sub-ledger named 'Project Hearth.' Every time a state grant hit their primary operating account, thirty percent was siphoned into shell corporations owned by Diane Bennett’s maiden name—Vanderbilt Holdings.""

Marcus whistled softly. ""Money laundering, tax evasion, and wire fraud on a state and federal level.""

""Worse,"" I continued, my voice steadying as the numbers fell into place in my head. ""The state transit grant they received last month was earmarked for safety retrofits on fuel tankers crossing the state line. They didn't retrofit a single tanker, Marcus. They forged the inspection certificates and moved twelve million dollars into an offshore escrow account in Saint Kitts. I printed the wire authorizations yesterday morning and left a copy in my locked filing cabinet at home. When Diane saw the paperwork on Paul’s desk yesterday afternoon, she came into the kitchen like a rabid animal.""

""And Paul?"" Marcus asked.

May you like

""Paul told her to finish it,"" I said, my voice dropping an octave, cold and lethal. ""He stood by the stove, watched his mother shatter my leg, and told me that in his house, women obey or pay the price. He wanted me terrified enough to sign the false audit report this morning.""

Marcus stood up, pocketing the drive. A predatory smile crossed his lips. ""They think they’re playing a local game of suburban politics and hush money. They have no idea they just handed the State Attorney General and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division the keys to their whole kingdom. Clara, for the next forty-eight hours, you remain dead to the world. You don’t call your friends, you don’t post on social media, you don’t answer Paul’s calls. Let them think their missing-person narrative is working. Let them walk right into the trap.""
