Chapter 8 - The Reconstruction

The next morning, the sun broke through the high windows of a private room at St. Luke’s Medical Pavilion.
It was the first morning in two weeks that I woke up without terror clutching my throat.
Dr. Chen himself had admitted me at midnight. He had personally inspected my surgical drains, repaired the torn stitch along my left pectoral flap, and administered non-opioid intravenous nerve blockers that dissolved the burning agony into a gentle, manageable hum. Beside my bed sat fresh lilies, an iced decaf latte, and Marcus Vance, who was sipping black coffee while reviewing a stack of blue-jacketed legal files.
""How are you feeling, kiddo?"" Marcus asked, peering over his reading glasses with a warm, fatherly smile.
""Like someone finally removed a boulder from my chest,"" I said, leaning back against three plush pillows. ""What’s the fallout?""
Marcus set his mug down on the bedside table and slid a file folder toward me.
""The State Attorney General filed sixty-four formal felony counts at dawn,"" Marcus explained cleanly. ""They raided Vance-Sterling Greenery at midnight. They found three years of double-entry bookkeeping, proving that Garrick had laundered nearly six hundred thousand dollars through municipal bids. The city council unanimously revoked his commercial licenses this morning. The local news has been running your video on a continuous loop since midnight. The headline on the morning paper reads: 'The Phony Saint of St. Jude.'""
""And Miriam?"" I asked.
""Bail was denied for both of them,"" Marcus smirked. ""The judge happened to be Judge Margaret Hall, a seven-year breast cancer survivor who actively supports the local oncology foundation. When she read the police report detailing how Miriam dumped thirty-eight oxycodone tablets down the drain while you were weeping on the floor, she nearly broke the bench with her gavel. Miriam is currently sitting in a holding cell at the county detention facility, wearing an orange jumpsuit and eating cold bologna sandwiches. Her church friends have already formed a petition to have her formally excommunicated.""
A soft, deep breath escaped my lungs. For the first time since my diagnosis, my chest didn't feel broken. It felt light.
""What about the assets?"" I asked.
""That's the best part,"" Marcus said, opening the folder to reveal a freshly stamped emergency court injunction. ""Because Garrick forged your signature on the quitclaim deed, we filed an emergency petition under the state's marital fraud statutes. The judge froze every single bank account associated with his name, his mother's name, and the landscaping firm. By noon tomorrow, the primary house will be returned exclusively to your sole ownership. The capital injection of your two hundred thousand dollars is being recouped with mandatory punitive interest from their seized liquid investments.""
Marcus paused, his gaze softening as he reached out and gently patted my hand.
May you like
""Nora, your father would have been extraordinarily proud of you today. You didn't just survive them. You dismantled them.""
A single tear rolled down my cheek, but it wasn't born of pain or grief. It was the sweet, overwhelming relief of freedom.
