Chapter 7 - The Downfall

Pandemonium erupted in the grand ballroom.
Councilman Bradley stood up from Table One, knocking his chair backward with a violent crash. ""Is this true, Garrick?! You've been laundering parish building funds through city contracts?!""
""No! No, please, everyone listen!"" Garrick screamed into the microphone, his polished composure shattering into hysterics. Spittle flew from his lips as he waved his arms wildly at the audience. ""This is a domestic dispute! My wife is mentally unstable! She’s hopped up on painkillers—she’s trying to destroy us out of spite!""
""You flushed her painkillers, you pathetic coward!"" yelled Mrs. Henderson, a senior patron who had sat on the charity board with Miriam for twenty years. Her face was flushed with righteous fury. ""We all saw it with our own eyes! You left your mutilated wife on the floor to suffer!""
Miriam lunged toward me, her eyes bloodshot, her silver cross swinging erratically. Her polished veneer had completely disintegrated, revealing the feral, vicious monster underneath. ""You treacherous little bitch!"" she shrieked, her claw-like hands reaching for my neck in front of three hundred witnesses. ""I took you into this family! I tried to save your wicked soul! You ruined my son! You ruined my life!""
Before she could touch me, two large men stepped onto the stage.
They weren't church security guards. They were plainclothes detectives from the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by two uniformed county deputies who had been waiting in the foyer since seven o'clock, courtesy of Marcus Vance’s direct federal tip.
""Miriam Sterling, step away from the victim,"" Detective Alvarez barked, grabbing Miriam’s wrists and forcing her arms behind her back with practiced efficiency.
""Get your hands off me!"" Miriam screamed, writhing against the deputy’s grip. ""Do you know who I am?! I am the head of this diocese committee! I am a pillar of this community!""
""You're under arrest for felony tampering with prescribed controlled substances, reckless endangerment of a vulnerable adult, and grand larceny,"" Detective Alvarez recited calmly over the house speakers as the handcuffs clicked loudly shut around her wrists.
Meanwhile, two deputies surrounded Garrick at the podium.
""Garrick Sterling, you have the right to remain silent,"" the second officer stated, pinning Garrick’s chest against the mahogany lectern.
""Wait! Wait! Call my lawyer! Nora, tell them to stop! Nora, please!"" Garrick pleaded, tears of pure terror finally streaming down his cheeks as the cold steel cuffed his wrists behind his back. ""I'm your husband! I love you! I was just trying to protect our family's reputation! Nora, look at me!""
I walked slowly to the edge of the stage, leaning lightly on the brass handrail. I looked down at the man who had abandoned me in a hospital recovery room, the man who had ordered me to parade my mutilated body for his financial vanity.

""You didn't have a family, Garrick,"" I said into the lapel microphone, my voice steady, clear, and resonant across the silent hall. ""You had a cartel. And your business just went bankrupt.""
The entire ballroom watched in stunned silence as mother and son were marched down the center aisle in handcuffs, past their elite donors, past their wealthy social circles, and out into the flashing blue and red emergency lights waiting in the night air.
