Chapter 6 - The Unveiling

We mounted the three carpeted steps to the stage. Garrick stood at the podium beside the pastor, beaming with unearned pride, while Miriam positioned herself at his right hand, clasping her hands over her heart. I stood slightly to the left, standing tall despite the agony tearing through my surgical sites.

On the back wall behind us hung a massive forty-foot motorized projection screen, designed to showcase the architectural renderings of the new youth center and the ceremonial oversized fifty-thousand-dollar check.

""Before Garrick presents his family’s extraordinary gift,"" Pastor Thomas announced, gesturing toward the back of the room, ""let us view a short presentation prepared by the family highlighting their journey of stewardship.""

Garrick frowned slightly. He turned to Miriam and whispered, ""Did you add a video to the slideshow?""

""No,"" Miriam hissed back, her eyes narrowing. ""I thought you handled the AV team.""

Suddenly, the ballroom lights cut out completely, plunging the hall into pitch-black darkness. A low digital hum vibrated through the high-powered subwoofers.

The giant screen flared to life.

It wasn't an architectural blueprint. It wasn't a family photo album.

The screen displayed a crystal-clear, high-definition video feed captured from an elevated ceiling angle. In the top-left corner, the red digital timestamp read: YESTERDAY — 2:14 PM.

A collective murmur rippled through the three hundred guests.

The video showed our home’s upstairs bathroom. The resolution was so immaculate that every single detail was visible: the clinical drainage bottles, the bloody bandages on the counter, and me, collapsed on the floor, gasping for breath.

Garrick’s face drained of color in an instant. His jaw dropped. ""What the hell is this?! Cut the feed! AV crew, cut the feed right now!""

Nobody cut the feed. Marcus Vance had remotely overridden the St. Jude media server with administrative root access, locking down the control booth consoles completely.

Then, the high-gain audio kicked in through the multi-thousand-watt stadium speakers. Miriam’s voice echoed across the auditorium with razor-sharp clarity:

""What you need is redemption... You see, Nora, this is what sickens me about your generation. The slightest inconvenience, the slightest pinch of the flesh, and you reach for artificial salvation.""

The room froze. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick carpet. Several women in the front row gasped, their hands flying to their mouths.

On the screen, Miriam calmly twisted the cap off the prescription bottle. The audio picked up the loud, hollow rattle of the pills hitting the water.

""Miriam, please! I had both breasts removed! The nerves are firing blind!"" my recorded voice begged, raw, broken, and agonizing to hear.

""There. Now you will learn what real faith feels like,"" Miriam’s sneering voice boomed from the speakers as the visual showed her gloved hand pushing the silver flush lever. ""When Garrick comes home, you will greet him with a smile, you will sit at the dinner table, and you will thank the Lord for pruning your pride.""

Miriam’s face on stage turned an unnatural shade of mottled purple. Her knees buckled slightly, her manicured fingers clawing at the wooden podium for support. ""Turn it off! It's a lie! It's an AI deepfake! Pastor Thomas, shut it off!""

Pastor Thomas stood frozen, his eyes wide with horrified disgust, staring at the woman he had praised as a saint just sixty seconds earlier.

The video didn't stop. It transitioned smoothly into a split-screen display.

On the left side, a secondary recording from the master bedroom played, showing Garrick standing over me that same evening: ""Mom threw the logbook out... You're going to put on a nice dress, pin your drains inside your jacket, sit at table number one, and smile. Nobody asked you to dance, Nora.""

On the right side of the forty-foot screen, forensic financial documents began scrolling in giant bold red text: bank statements showing $412,000 systematically transferred from the St. Jude Youth Charity Account directly into ""Vance-Sterling Landscaping LLC,"" followed by a fraudulent quitclaim deed bearing my forged signature, mortgaging my home to cover Garrick's mounting debts.

At the very bottom of the screen, in massive gold letters, flashed the final slide:

""THE WAGES OF SIN IS EXPOSURE. COMPLIMENTS OF NORA STERLING.""
