Chapter 6 - On Bended Knee

When the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around Daniel's wrists, the final shred of his manufactured ego snapped.

He looked around wildly. He looked at the thirty guests who had cheered for him an hour ago, but they were now averting their eyes, shaking their heads in disgust, or whispering among themselves. He looked at his mother, but Margaret had collapsed onto a stone bench, weeping hysterical, dry tears, clutching her pearls in terror.

And finally, he looked at me.

Standing before him was not the meek, quiet girl he had pushed around in the kitchen. Standing before him was the sole heir to a commercial empire, backed by the best legal team in the state, protected by private security, and surrounded by law enforcement.

Suddenly, Daniel’s knees buckled.

He dropped down onto the damp gravel, falling to his knees right in front of me, exactly where he had stood an hour ago telling me to know my place.

""Emily... please,"" he sobbed, tears streaming freely down his flushed cheeks. ""Emily, I'm sorry! I swear to God I'm sorry! I lost my temper! The stress... the pressure to provide for everyone... it was making me crazy!""

""You weren't providing for anyone, Daniel,"" I said, looking down at him with neither anger nor pity. Just total indifference. ""You were living off my inheritance while treating me like a servant.""

""I love you, Emily!"" Daniel pleaded, his voice cracking into high-pitched wails that echoed across the hillside. ""I made a mistake! Please, tell them to drop the charges! We can fix this! We can go to counseling! I'll never speak to my mother again if that’s what you want! Just don't ruin my life!""

Margaret’s head snapped up. ""Daniel! How dare you—""

""Shut up, Mom!"" Daniel screamed back at his mother, turning on her with savage desperation. ""This is your fault! You demanded sixty dishes! You demanded a lavish party! You told me to put her in her place! You ruined everything!""

The sight was pathetic. A grown man, handcuffed on the ground, throwing his own mother under the bus the second the walls closed in around him.

The guests didn't need to see any more.

""Harrison, get the car,"" Evelyn Vance said loudly, walking past Daniel without even looking down. ""I have never been so disgusted in my entire life.""

""Wait, please! Don't leave!"" Margaret cried out, reaching toward her high-society friends. ""It's a misunderstanding! We are the Whitmores! We belong here!""

""You don't belong anywhere near us, Margaret,"" another guest snapped, brushing her hand away. ""You're a pair of shameless frauds.""

Within ten minutes, the terrace was empty. Car engines started, headlights swept across the lawn, and the thirty guests who had arrived to celebrate Margaret Whitmore fled the estate like rats abandoning a sinking ship.

Rebecca Sterling stepped forward, holding a second folder. She handed an eviction notice directly to Margaret.

""Mrs. Margaret Whitmore,"" Rebecca announced formally. ""As you are not an owner, a leaseholder, or a lawful tenant of this property, you have exactly sixty minutes to collect your personal clothing and vacate the premises. Vance Security will supervise your packing. Anything not removed in sixty minutes will be cataloged and placed on the curb.""

May you like

""One hour?!"" Margaret shrieked, clutching her chest. ""Where am I supposed to go?! I don't have a car! Daniel has all the accounts!""

""Perhaps you can cook sixty dishes,"" I said quietly, ""and trade them for a motel room.""
