Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Lies

I walked forward slowly, my heels clicking rhythmically against the stone paving. Daniel instinctively backed up a step, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and growing panic.

""Let's talk about what you actually pay for, Daniel,"" I continued, tilting my head slightly. ""For thirty-six months, you told your friends, your family, and your mother that you were a venture capital titan. But where did your investment capital come from?""

Rebecca pulled out a thick stack of bank statements and handed them to me.

""Six months after we married,"" I said, holding up the first document, ""you took out a three-hundred-thousand-dollar line of credit against my commercial checking account without my consent. You forged my signature. You gambled it on an offshore crypto scheme and lost every single cent.""

Daniel’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

""When the lenders came knocking,"" I said, step by step closing the distance between us, ""who bailed you out? I did. Because I believed you were under stress. Because I believed in marriage.""

""Emily, wait..."" Daniel stammered, raising his hands defensively. ""That was... that was an honest mistake, we talked about that...""

""And what about your mother's luxury lifestyle?"" I asked, turning my cold gaze toward Margaret, who was now clutching her chest, looking like she might faint. ""The seventy-thousand-dollar European cruise last summer? The bespoke wardrobe? The two-thousand-dollar-a-month spa membership? Charged directly to Vance Holdings corporate credit cards, which you claimed were 'business development expenses' for your nonexistent clients.""

The guests on the terrace were now whispering frantically. Several of Margaret’s closest friends began moving away from the center of the terrace, quietly retreating toward the driveway where their valet keys were held.

""She’s lying!"" Margaret shrieked, though her voice lacked its earlier venom and sounded shrill with pure desperation. ""Daniel, tell them she’s lying! She’s an ungrateful, spiteful little wretch who's making up stories to humiliate us on my birthday!""

""I don't make up stories, Margaret,"" I said coldly. ""I deal in audits.""

A fourth car suddenly pulled through the gates—a marked police cruiser, followed by an unmarked black sedan with federal insignia.

Two Westchester County police officers and two plainclothes detectives stepped out. The senior detective, Detective Miller, tipped his hat to Rebecca Sterling before walking directly up to Daniel.

""Daniel Whitmore?"" Detective Miller asked.

Daniel swallowed hard, his skin turning a sickly shade of gray. ""Yes... Officer, what is this about? This is a civil matter between my wife and me, we just had an argument—""

""This is not a civil matter, Mr. Whitmore,"" Detective Miller interrupted sternly. ""Two hours ago, Vance Holdings filed a formal criminal complaint detailing forty-two counts of wire fraud, bank forgery, and the unlawful embezzlement of over 2.4 million dollars from Eleanor Vance Real Estate Trust.""

Detective Miller pulled a set of steel handcuffs from his utility belt.

""Furthermore,"" the detective added, glancing toward me, ""we have reviewed the high-definition security footage from your kitchen timestamped at two-fifteen this afternoon. The footage clearly shows you violently assaulting Mrs. Vance, dragging her by the hair, and shoving her into a kitchen counter.""

Gasps of horror erupted from the terrace.

""My god,"" whispered Evelyn Vance, Margaret's longtime acquaintance. ""He dragged her by the hair?!""

""Daniel..."" Harrison Sterling said, stepping backward in disgust. ""You laid hands on your wife?""

May you like

""It was an accident!"" Daniel cried out, his voice cracking as his bravado completely disintegrated. ""She provoked me! She was refusing to cook for my mother! It was family business!""

""Assault is not family business, Mr. Whitmore,"" Detective Miller said coldly. ""Turn around and place your hands behind your back.""
