Chapter 3 - The Darkening Sky

By five-thirty in the afternoon, the clouds over the Westchester valley had begun to thicken, casting a slate-gray shadow across the sweeping lawn. A chilly breeze swept through the terrace, ruffling the silk tablecloths and causing several guests to wrap their shawls more tightly around their shoulders.
Margaret was pacing near the grand glass patio doors, glancing repeatedly at her diamond-encrusted watch.
""It has been nearly two hours,"" Margaret snapped, turning to Daniel with theatrical exasperation. ""The catering staff you fired to save money isn't here, Emily isn't here, and the oven is cold! Harrison is asking about dinner, and Judge Bradley has to leave by eight! Is this how she honors my milestone? By deliberately humiliating me?""
Daniel’s jaw clenched so tight the muscles twitched. His mother knew exactly which buttons to push. Throughout his childhood, Margaret had weaponized guilt and shame to control him, and now Daniel redirected that exact toxic rage onto me.
""She’s doing this on purpose,"" Daniel snarled, pulling out his smartphone. ""She wants to embarrass me because I put her in her place earlier. She thinks she can play games with me.""
He dialed my number. The phone rang three times before going straight to voicemail.
""Emily, pick up the damn phone!"" Daniel yelled into the receiver, not caring that several guests were watching him with raised eyebrows. ""If you aren't back in this driveway in ten minutes with the food, pack your bags and don't bother coming back inside! You are ruining my mother's life!""
He slammed the phone down onto a glass outdoor table, shattering an empty tumbler.
""Daniel, darling, calm down,"" Margaret said smoothly, though a wicked glint of satisfaction danced in her eyes. ""Let her stay gone. In fact, it might be for the best. You've outgrown her anyway. A man of your stature needs a woman of social standing, not a glorified nanny who panics at the thought of hosting a simple dinner party.""
""You're right, Mom,"" Daniel breathed, running a hand through his gelled hair. ""I’ve tolerated her nonsense for far too long. I gave her a roof over her head, bought her clothes, allowed her to live like royalty in my family estate... and she disrespects you? In your own home?""
""Exactly,"" Margaret agreed softly, patting his arm. ""Tomorrow morning, we change the locks. We'll have her few possessions boxed up and delivered to a motel. You deserve better, my boy.""
""Excuse me, Daniel,"" called out Senator Vance’s aide, who was mingling near the fountain. ""Are we going to be eating anytime soon? The smell of roasting herbs earlier was incredible, but it seems to have vanished.""
Daniel forced an oily, charming smile. ""Just a minor delay in the kitchen, Peter! A slight issue with our head chef. I've ordered a private courier service to expedite the entrees from the city’s finest French bistro. It will be an unforgettable evening, I promise you!""
He turned back toward the glass doors, his smile vanishing into a venomous scowl. He was furious. In his mind, Emily was hiding somewhere, crying like a weak child, trying to make him feel guilty. He decided right then that when I returned, he wouldn't just berate me behind closed doors—he would publicly dismiss me, playing the role of the long-suffering husband who had finally been pushed too far by an incompetent wife.
Down at the front entrance gates, a half-mile away through the dense pine trees that lined the private drive, a low metallic rumble began to vibrate through the earth.
The estate's automated security system beeped once at the kitchen control panel. A notification flashed on the wall-mounted screen: Gate Override: Master Key Admin Access Granted.
Daniel didn't notice the screen. He was too busy pouring himself another stiff glass of bourbon to settle his boiling temper.
Margaret stood near the edge of the terrace, looking out over the winding driveway. Suddenly, her eyes narrowed.
""Daniel?"" she called out, her voice losing some of its haughty confidence. ""Did you order three black limousines?""
Daniel frowned, walking over with his glass in hand. ""Limousines? No. I told you, I haven't ordered the delivery yet.""
""Then who is that?"" Margaret pointed.
Emerging from the tree-lined bend, three identical, midnight-black Cadillac Escalades drove in tight formation up the serpentine driveway. Their tinted windows reflected the darkening sky like mirrors of polished obsidian. They moved with ominous precision, not speeding, but maintaining a heavy, purposeful momentum that commanded immediate attention.
The chatter on the terrace died down. One by one, the thirty guests set down their drinks and walked toward the stone balustrade, murmuring among themselves.
""Are those federal plates?"" whispered an attorney sitting near the fire pit.
""No,"" whispered another guest, peering closely. ""Look at the crest on the front grill. That's Vance Global Security.""
Daniel’s brow furrowed. He swallowed hard, trying to regain his composure. ""It must be a VIP guest,"" he announced loudly to the crowd, though his voice cracked slightly. ""Perhaps one of my high-net-worth investors heard about Mother's birthday and decided to surprise us!""
May you like
Margaret beamed instantly, smoothing down her dress. ""Oh! How thoughtful! See, Daniel? That is how real people show respect!""
The three massive SUVs came to a synchronized stop directly in front of the main portico, blocking the driveway completely. The engines rumbled in unison, a low, menacing purr that made the ground beneath their feet tremble.
