Chapter 6 - The Architect Steps Up

While Vincent was crumbling inside his empty penthouse, Eleanor and I were sitting in the private dining room of the Chicago Union League Club, dining with three of the city’s most influential venture capitalists.

""The logistics sector is shifting toward autonomous AI routing,"" I explained, gesturing toward the digital tablet displaying my team's proprietary architecture. ""The patent Vincent licensed to Moretti Enterprises was merely version two. My team has spent the last eighteen months developing version three—an entirely independent, decentralized platform that reduces operational overhead by forty-two percent.""

The lead investor, Marcus Sterling—a sharp-eyed man in his early forties with a reputation for spotting game-changing tech—leaned back in his chair, deeply impressed. ""And this platform is wholly owned by Claire Moretti Design Solutions?""

""One hundred percent,"" Eleanor answered smoothly, raising her wine glass. ""And Richard and I are personally backing her initial funding round with thirty million dollars from our private family office. Moretti Enterprises will be Claire’s first enterprise client, not her owner.""

Marcus smiled, looking directly at me with genuine respect. ""You're a brilliant strategist, Claire. It takes real vision to separate the software architecture from the heavy logistics infrastructure. We’re in for twenty million. Let’s draft the term sheet by tomorrow morning.""

As the investors excused themselves, leaving Eleanor and me at the table, a long, quiet sigh escaped my lips. The tension that had coiled inside my shoulders for days finally began to loosen.

""You did that yourself, Claire,"" Eleanor said softly, reaching across the white linen tablecloth to cover my hand. ""Never let anyone convince you that you were just Vincent’s wife. You were the brilliance behind his success. He was merely the loudspeaker.""

""Thank you, Eleanor,"" I whispered, tears pricking my eyes. ""Not many mothers would take their daughter-in-law's side over their own flesh and blood.""

Eleanor’s expression softened, showing a vulnerability she rarely allowed the world to see. ""Vincent is my son, and I will always love him. But love does not mean enabling cruelty, arrogance, and deceit. If I allowed him to destroy you, I would have failed as a mother. A real parent teaches their child that actions have consequences. He needed to hit rock bottom to have any hope of becoming a real man.""

Suddenly, the waiter approached our table with an apologetic expression. ""Excuse me, Mrs. Moretti. There is a gentleman downstairs in the lobby demanding to see you. He says his name is Vincent.""

Eleanor and I exchanged a glance.

""Let him come up,"" Eleanor instructed calmly.

Two minutes later, Vincent appeared in the doorway of the private dining room. He looked terrible. His suit was wrinkled, his hair unkempt, and the dark circles beneath his eyes made him look ten years older. When he saw me sitting beside his mother, glowing under the chandelier light, a flicker of raw, desperate shame crossed his face.

""Claire,"" he croaked, taking a hesitant step forward. ""Mother. Please. Just give me five minutes.""
