Chapter 4 - The Corporate Ambush

The headquarters of Moretti Enterprises occupied the top six floors of a gleaming glass skyscraper overlooking the Chicago River. Normally, Vincent strutted through the executive floor like a feudal lord surveying his kingdom.
Today, he was storming through the glass corridors with his tie loosened and his face dark with rage.
""What do you mean the emergency board meeting was called without my consent?"" Vincent roared at his administrative assistant as he shoved open the double mahogany doors to the boardroom. ""I am the Chief Operating Officer!""
""You were the Chief Operating Officer, Vincent,"" Eleanor’s voice echoed across the expansive conference table.
Vincent froze in the doorway.
The entire executive board was present. At the head of the table sat Richard Moretti, looking older than his years but entirely resolute. Next to him sat Eleanor, impeccably dressed in an emerald-green tailored suit. And sitting directly across from the vacant COO chair was me, flanked by two senior corporate attorneys.
""Claire?"" Vincent’s voice cracked with disbelief. ""What is this? What is she doing here?""
""Sit down, Vincent,"" Richard commanded, his voice rumbling with authority. ""Before you embarrass yourself any further in front of the board.""
Vincent took a shaky breath, buttoning his suit jacket as he attempted to regain his executive composure. He pulled out the leather chair at the foot of the table and sat down, glaring at me with raw venom.
""If this is about my marital difficulties,"" Vincent said, projecting his voice for the board members, ""I assure the board that my personal life has no bearing on my ability to lead the logistics division. This is a private matter being weaponized by my wife and mother.""
""Your personal life became corporate business the moment you authorized a four-hundred-thousand-dollar consulting payment to 'Vanguard Horizon LLC,'"" Attorney Vance announced, sliding an audit report into the center of the table. ""A shell corporation registered in Delaware, whose sole beneficiary is Sophia Reynolds.""
Vincent turned pale. ""That was... that was for market analysis.""
""Vanguard Horizon has no employees, no office, and its primary business expense was a six-month lease on a luxury high-rise in Lincoln Park,"" Vance continued ruthlessly. ""That is corporate embezzlement, Vincent. A felony under Illinois state law.""
""You embezzled company funds for your mistress?"" one of the senior board members gasped, shaking his head in disgust. ""Richard, this is unacceptable. The reputational damage alone could tank our upcoming public bond offering.""
""There's more,"" Richard said, his eyes fixed on his son. ""The logistics automation algorithm that generated thirty percent of our profit margins this fiscal year? Vincent claimed he developed it with an external engineering firm. In reality, the patents are registered exclusively to Claire Moretti’s private firm. Moretti Enterprises has merely been licensing the software.""
Vincent whipped his head toward me, his eyes wild. ""You licensed it to the company! We are married! That makes it community property!""
I leaned forward, clasping my hands on the glass table. ""We signed a post-nuptial agreement four years ago, Vincent. Do you remember? You insisted on it when your tech startup was booming, because you wanted to make sure I couldn't touch your equity if we ever split.""
A bitter, cold irony settled over the room. Vincent remembered. I could see the exact moment the memory struck him by the way his shoulders slumped. He had forced me to sign a draconian agreement to protect his ego, ensuring that any intellectual property created under my consultancy remained entirely separate from marital assets.
""As of eight o'clock this morning,"" I said calmly, ""my firm has officially terminated the licensing agreement with Moretti Enterprises due to material breach of contract and unauthorized corporate transfers.""
""You can't do that!"" Vincent shouted, slamming both palms down on the table as he shot out of his chair. ""The entire supply chain will grind to a halt by Friday! You're destroying my division!""
""No, Vincent,"" Eleanor said softly, her voice chilling the room. ""You destroyed it. Claire is simply taking her work back.""
Richard raised his hand, signaling the board secretary. ""All in favor of immediately removing Vincent Moretti from the office of Chief Operating Officer and stripping him of all executive voting rights, signify by saying aye.""
A chorus of unanimous, resounding ""Ayes"" filled the room.

Vincent stood frozen, looking around the table at men and women who had bowed to him for years. Not a single person met his eyes. He had been stripped of his title, his salary, and his pride in less than twenty minutes.
""You have until five o'clock to clear your personal effects from this building,"" Richard said, not even looking at his son. ""Security will escort you down.""
