Chapter 2 - The Mother-in-Law’s Gambit

Vincent’s jaw worked silently, searching for an excuse, an angle, a lie slick enough to slide out of the corner he had backed himself into. Sophia stepped back toward the doorway, clutching her little boy tighter as the mask of fragile victimhood began to crack.

""Claire, that’s... that was business entertaining,"" Vincent stammered, his charm utterly failing him. ""Sophia was consulting on the hospitality contract. I was going to tell you once the deal closed.""

""You are an amateur, Vincent,"" Eleanor said softly, walking over to stand directly beside me. She looped her arm gently through mine, an unmistakable declaration of allegiance. ""A man who cannot manage his own desires has no business managing an empire.""

""This is ridiculous,"" Vincent snarled, finally dropping all pretense of gentleness. ""You're turning my own wife against me over a baseless accusation! Claire, pack your things. We're going back to our penthouse right now.""

""No,"" I said. The word was small, but it rang through the vast hallway with the force of an iron gate slamming shut.

Vincent blinked, stunned. ""Excuse me?""

""I'm staying here with your mother,"" I said, meeting his gaze without flinching. ""If Sophia needs a place to stay so desperately, take her to our penthouse. After all, you seem to think our marriage is open for public charity.""

Vincent scoffed, though panic flickered in his eyes. ""Fine. If you want to throw a childish tantrum with my mother, be my guest. But don't expect me to come crawling back when you realize how paranoid you sound."" He turned on his heel, grabbed Sophia by the elbow, and practically dragged her out the front doors, letting them slam with a deafening boom.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Richard let out a long, ragged exhale, running a hand over his face. ""I apologize, Claire. I raised an arrogant fool.""

""Don't apologize for him, Richard,"" Eleanor said sharply, though her grip on my arm remained tender. ""He made his choices. Now we make ours. Claire, come to my private study. It’s time you learned how this family actually operates.""

Ten minutes later, I sat across from Eleanor in her sunlit private study, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and antique legal folios. A steaming mug of chamomile tea sat in front of me, untouched.

""Drink,"" Eleanor commanded gently. ""Shock drains your blood sugar. You need your wits sharp for the next seventy-two hours.""

I took a small sip, the warmth doing little to thaw the ice inside my chest. ""How long have you known, Eleanor?""

Eleanor leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, her expression calculating yet maternal. ""I suspected three months ago when Vincent started shifting funds from his personal portfolio into offshore trusts. I hired private investigators two weeks later. He didn't just reconnect with Sophia, Claire. He bought her a luxury condo in Lincoln Park under a shell corporation six months ago.""

The room spun. ""Six months?""

""Yes. Sophia’s divorce was finalized two years ago, but her ex-husband caught her attempting to embezzle family assets. She was left with virtually nothing except child support. She targeted Vincent because she knew his pride, his vanity, and most importantly, his access to Moretti capital.""

""Why didn't you tell me immediately?"" My voice cracked, a surge of betrayal rising toward the older woman. ""Why let me look like a fool shopping for his father's birthday while he paraded her around?""

""Because if I told you, you would have confronted him in private,"" Eleanor answered with absolute clarity. ""He would have gaslit you, bought you diamonds, wept at your feet, and convinced you that your intuition was madness. You would have forgiven him, and he would have slowly, systematically drained your joint assets until you had nothing left to walk away with.""

Eleanor opened a sleek leather folder and slid a thick stack of documents across the desk toward me.

""What is this?"" I asked, looking down at rows of legal signatures and corporate seals.

""That,"" Eleanor said with a cold, triumphant smile, ""is the revised operating agreement for Moretti Enterprises. Ten years ago, when Richard and I established the family trust, we retained fifty-one percent of the voting shares. Vincent was given control of the logistics branch under the condition that any breach of the family moral conduct clause would trigger an immediate buyback at original book value.""

She leaned forward, tapping a manicured fingernail against the paper.

""Vincent forgot one fundamental truth, Claire. He isn't the brains behind the logistics division. You are. You designed the entire automated distribution network three years ago under your consultancy firm, Moretti Design Solutions. The intellectual property belongs to you, not him.""

I looked up, meeting Eleanor's piercing gaze as the realization washed over me.

""He thinks he can replace you with a shiny ornament from his past,"" Eleanor whispered. ""Let’s show him what happens when the foundation walks away from the building.""
