Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

I folded my arms, looking down at the man who had turned my life into a battlefield.
"I bought a horse ranch in Montana two days ago," I said, my voice steady, carrying an authority Alexander had never heard from me before. "Through Christian’s offshore trust. It’s completely legal, fully funded, and forty miles away from any paved highway."
Alexander slowly stood up, looking at me as if I were a ghost.
"Claire, the Department of Justice—"
"Christian negotiated a plea agreement this morning," I interrupted, pulling a signed affidavit from my purse and tossing it onto the foot of Maya’s bed. "Full immunity on the state racketeering charges in exchange for your testimony against the five families. Three years of supervised house arrest. No jail time."
Alexander picked up the papers, his hands shaking so violently the pages rustled against each other.
"Why would you do this?" he choked out, staring at the government seals on the document. "After everything I kept from you? After seven years of deception?"
I walked over to the bed, picking up Lily and resting her on my hip, while keeping my other hand gently rested on Maya’s blanket.
"I didn't do this for you, Alexander," I said, meeting his eyes with unwavering clarity. "I did this for Maya. I did this for Noah. And I did it for Lily."
I took a slow, deep breath, letting the remaining anger of the past two weeks drain away into the cold Zurich air.
"You spent seven years trying to protect everyone by controlling everything from behind a wall of lies," I continued. "And all it did was almost get our children slaughtered in the woods."
Alexander lowered his head, unable to speak, tears streaming down his face.
"If you want to be a father to these children," I added, "the mob boss dies today. The lies die today. If I ever catch you hiding a single phone call, a single dollar, or a single secret, I will take all three children and you will spend the rest of your life looking for us."
Alexander dropped to both knees in front of me, pressing his forehead against my boots, sobbing openly in the middle of the pediatric ward.
"I swear to you, Claire," he wept, his voice muffled against my shoes. "I swear on my mother’s soul, on Sophia's grave, on my life. I will never lie to you again."
I looked down at him, feeling the iron grip of fear finally release its hold on my heart.
He wasn't my captor anymore.
May you like
He was just a broken man who had finally been given a second chance to earn his soul back.
"Get up, Alexander," I said quietly, offering him my hand. "We have a flight to catch."
