Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Patriarch

Richard Moretti lunged toward the table, his cane clattering to the floor as his hands clawed desperately for the case.

"Give it to Weber!" Richard screamed, his face turning an apoplectic purple. "Start the infusion! When the girl is stable, we execute the transfer protocols! The family stays intact!"

Alexander caught his father’s wrists with one hand, his grip crushing the old man’s frail bones until Richard cried out in pain.

"The family ends today, Father," Alexander said, his voice stripped of all emotion.

"What are you saying?" Richard gasped, squirming against his son's iron grip. "I built this empire! I pulled you from the gutter when you were weak! I gave you Claire! I gave you your sons!"

"You used my wife as breeding stock," Alexander snarled, leaning in until his breath hit the old man's ear. "You held a dying child hostage over my neck for eight years. You ordered a hit squad to murder Lily and Noah in the woods."

Alexander threw his father backward into the leather waiting chair.

Two armed men in tactical gear stepped into the room, their faces covered, bearing the emblem of the Swiss Federal Police.

Behind them walked Christian Vance, holding a thick leather binder overflowing with audited financial records.

"Richard Moretti," Christian stated calmly, presenting a red-stamped international warrant. "You are under arrest for human trafficking, conspiracy to commit premeditated murder, and thirty-four counts of international financial racketeering."

Richard’s jaw dropped. He looked at Alexander in utter disbelief.

"You turned state's evidence?" Richard shrieked, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "You broke the code! You sold out your own blood to the feds!"

"I sold out you," Alexander answered coldly. "Every offshore account you set up to launder cartel blood money was registered under your personal signature. Christian handed the encryption keys to the Department of Justice two hours ago."

Richard scrambled toward the door, but the Swiss officers grabbed him by his shoulders, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

"Alexander! You fool!" Richard screamed as they dragged him down the sterile corridor, his polished shoes squeaking uselessly against the white floor. "Without the empire, you are nothing! She will leave you! You will die alone in an empty cage!"

The heavy double doors swung shut, cutting off the old man's frantic ravings.

The room returned to absolute silence, save for the steady, rhythmic beeping of Maya’s heart monitor.

Dr. Weber entered quietly, accompanied by three pediatric hematology specialists.

He bowed his head respectfully to me, picked up the carbon-fiber case, and carried it through the airlock into Maya’s isolation unit.

I stood against the glass wall, watching through the clear panel as the doctors prepped the umbilical stem cells for transfusion.

Alexander walked up beside me, maintaining a respectful distance, his hands buried deep in the pockets of his coat.

"Noah will never be touched by this world, Claire," Alexander said, his voice thick with unspent grief. "I have signed over the entirety of my private, uncorrupted estate to a blind trust in your name. The lakeside mansion, the European holdings, the offshore accounts Christian cleaned."

I didn't turn to look at him. "Is that supposed to buy back the seven years of lies?"

"No," he said softly. "Nothing can buy that back. It’s to ensure that when you walk out of this hospital, you never have to ask another man for anything as long as you live."

He turned to face me, his gray eyes shining with raw truth.

"I’m leaving the syndicate, Claire. When Richard’s trial concludes, the Moretti family name in Chicago will cease to exist. I’m stepping down completely."

"And where will you go?" I asked, finally meeting his gaze.

May you like

Alexander looked through the glass at Maya, whose breathing was already beginning to stabilize as the doctors administered the preliminary IV lines.

"Wherever my daughter needs to heal," Alexander replied. "Even if I have to watch her grow up from across an empty room."
