Chapter 8 - The Price of Survival

Alexander fell to his knees on the damp stone steps, the undisputed king of Chicago’s underworld humbling himself before the neighborhood.
"Please, Claire... don't destroy everything I spent fifteen years building," he begged, tears finally welling in his dark eyes.
"Tell me what you want. Half the syndicate? The offshore accounts? The penthouse? Take it all, just release the port."
I stepped out onto the porch, looking down at the man who had thought he could leave me with sixty dollars and a broken heart.
"Here are my terms, Alexander. They are non-negotiable, and if you hesitate for three seconds, I sign the terminal over to the port authority."
Alexander nodded frantically, looking up at me like a condemned man awaiting a royal pardon.
"First, you sign an uncontested divorce decree surrendering full legal and physical custody of Ethan with zero visitation rights."
"Second, you deed the entirety of the Rossi commercial easements back to my family trust, free of all syndicate debt."
"And third," I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear the final, devastating blow, "you will attend my mother's memorial service tomorrow."
"You will stand in the back of the chapel, in the rain, without your guards and without your titles."
"And you will bow your head to the woman whose name you were never worthy to speak."
Alexander swallowed hard, the tears finally spilling over his cheeks as he realized the absolute finality of his defeat.
He had conquered rival bosses, evaded federal prosecutors, and amassed tens of millions of dollars in illicit power.
Yet he had lost his son, his wife, and his soul to the quiet woman who had once lovingly ironed his shirts.

"I accept," he choked out, bowing his forehead against the damp stone step.
"I accept every word."
