Chapter 10 - The Sun Over the Harbor

Six months later, the spring sunshine melted the last traces of winter ice across the calm waters of Lake Michigan.
The signs at the entrance to the industrial docks had been completely replaced with gleaming brass letters: Rossi & Son Maritime Logistics.
Under my direct administration, the shipping terminals had transitioned entirely into legitimate commercial freight, cutting every illicit tie to the syndicate.
Ethan ran across the green lawn of the lakefront park, flying a brightly colored kite that danced against the crisp blue sky.
Beside me on the wooden park bench sat Mr. Henderson, reviewing the quarterly earnings report with a broad, satisfied grin.
"The clean energy contracts are locked in for the next ten years, Claire," he said, handing me the signed portfolio.
"Your mother would be immensely proud of what you've built out of the ashes."
"She built the foundation, Arthur," I smiled, watching Ethan laugh as the kite soared higher into the wind.
"I just made sure nobody could ever steal the deed."
According to the morning papers, Alexander Moretti had officially relocated his remaining operations south toward St. Louis.
He had survived the tribunal, but the loss of the Chicago ports had broken his absolute dominance over the Midwestern underworld.
He was living in an isolated fortified estate, guarded by hired guns who didn't care about his name, his meals, or his broken heart.
My phone chimed in my pocket, displaying a brief message from our school principal praising Ethan’s latest science project.
I smiled, locking the screen and slipping the device back into my purse without a single thought of the past.
There were no late-night phone calls to dread, no lies to untangle, and no apologies to beg from people who didn't deserve our grace.
"Mom! Look how high it goes!" Ethan called out, waving to me with pure, unshadowed joy across the grass.
May you like
I stood up from the bench and walked toward my son, breathing in the fresh, clean spring air that tasted of freedom and new beginnings.
We had buried the ghosts of our past, reclaimed our heritage, and stepped boldly into a light that would never fade again.
