Chapter 7 - The Master of the House

Salvatore struggled to regain his composure, stepping around the head of the table with a forced, patronizing laugh.

"Claire, dear," Salvatore said, holding up his hands. "This is a closed executive session. You filed for divorce this morning. You have no standing here."

"I have every standing, Salvatore," I replied coolly, nodding to Julian, who handed a certified document to the corporate secretary.

"You referenced Section Fourteen of the bylaws. Perhaps you should have read Section Sixteen."

"The Vance Trust does not freeze upon marital separation. It defaults entirely to the sole discretion of the trustee—which is me."

The corporate secretary scanned the parchment, his eyes widening in shock.

"She’s right, Mr. Moretti," the secretary stammered, looking up at Salvatore.

"Mrs. Moretti holds fifty-one percent of the active voting shares in her personal name. She has absolute executive authority over this board."

Vincent stared at me from the end of the table, his mouth slightly parted, completely stunned.

For seven years, he had treated me like a delicate flower he needed to protect from the harsh realities of his world.

He had never realized that his father had given me the keys to his entire kingdom before he even said his wedding vows.

"Furthermore," I continued, gesturing toward the federal auditors, who opened their lockboxes and distributed thick dossiers to every member.

"We conducted an emergency audit of the southern shipping berths at midnight."

"Over the past eight months, thirty-four million dollars in counterfeit electronics were routed through Warehouse Nine, signed off by Salvatore Moretti."

"And every single shipment was timed to the exact hour that Sophia Reynolds made emergency distress calls to my husband."

Vincent froze, his head snapping toward Salvatore, the pieces finally crashing together in his mind with terrifying clarity.

"Sophia was on your payroll?" Vincent whispered, his voice trembling with a deadly, quiet fury that filled the room.

"She received twenty thousand dollars a month from Salvatore’s Cayman account, Vincent," I answered, finally looking directly into my husband’s devastated eyes.

"Every time you left our dinner table, every time you missed our daughter's school plays, every time you walked out of our home..."

"You weren't saving a fragile woman. You were acting as Salvatore’s personal decoy while he robbed your company blind."
