Chapter 3 - The Fortress of Law

Julian Vance did not flinch when the heavy glass doors of his law firm’s twenty-fourth-floor office swung open.

Four of Vincent’s armed enforcers stood in the reception area, but Julian’s private security detail was already standing by the elevators.

Vincent walked straight past the receptionist, slamming both hands onto Julian’s polished mahogany desk.

"Where are my wife and daughter, Julian?" Vincent snarled, his tailored coat open, revealing the leather shoulder holster beneath.

Julian calmly capped his fountain pen, leaned back in his leather executive chair, and adjusted his reading glasses.

"You are trespassing on private property, Vincent," Julian said smoothly.

"And if you draw that sidearm, three federal marshals in the adjacent conference room will arrest you for witness intimidation."

"I don't give a damn about marshals!" Vincent snapped, leaning in until his shadow fell completely over Julian.

"Claire is my wife! Emma is my blood! You have ten seconds to give me an address before I dismantle your firm."

"Claire filed an emergency domestic abandonment petition this morning at eight-fifteen," Julian replied, sliding a blue-backed legal folio across the desk.

"Signed by Judge Katherine Montgomery."

Vincent’s breath hitched; Judge Montgomery was incorruptible, a family court judge who despised mob bosses and neglected children.

"Read paragraph four, Vincent," Julian continued, his voice dripping with icy contempt.

"Medical logs from Chicago Memorial Hospital confirm Emma arrived in an ambulance with a core temperature of 103.4 degrees."

"She suffered febrile seizures in triage while you were forty blocks away resetting a tripped circuit breaker for Sophia Reynolds."

Vincent took a slow, unsteady step back, as if the air had been sucked out of his lungs.

"Seizures?" he whispered, his eyes widening in pure horror. "Claire... Claire said she just had a fever."

"Claire tried to tell you three times before you walked out the front door, Vincent," Julian snapped, standing up to meet his gaze.

"You told her to give Emma medicine and walked away to comfort a grown woman with a leaky faucet."

"My sister sat by an IV pole alone all night, holding that little girl’s hand while Emma cried for her daddy."

Vincent’s hands began to tremble, a rare, terrifying sight for a man who ruled Chicago’s underworld with an iron fist.

The memory of Emma’s little voice from three nights ago came rushing back: Daddy, will you read me Barnaby Bear?

He had brushed her forehead, told her he had an urgent business meeting, and driven straight to Sophia’s loft to replace a lightbulb.

"I didn't know," Vincent choked out, his throat burning. "I swear to God, Julian, I didn't know she seized."

"Ignorance is not a legal defense for criminal neglect," Julian said coldly.

"Claire wants nothing from you. No spousal support, no asset splits, no payouts. She just wants full, permanent custody of Emma."

"Never," Vincent growled, his desperate rage returning like a wild beast. "I will burn this entire state to the ground before I let another man raise my child."

"Then you had better prepare for trial, Vincent," Julian said, hitting the button on his intercom.

"Because when we open the discovery files, Sophia Reynolds won't just ruin your marriage. She will destroy your entire empire."
