Chapter 9 - The Thaw

In the sterile, white-tiled intensive care suite of the private Warwick facility, the rhythmic beep... beep... beep of the cardiac monitor was the loudest sound in the universe.

I was floating between two worlds. The cold, peaceful expanse of death was tugging at my consciousness, a quiet ocean of silence where there was no pain, no fear, and no sound of slamming doors. But something warm was anchoring me—a searing, desperate heat gripping my right hand, pulling me back through the ice.

""Come back to me, Laurel.""

The voice was rough, cracked with exhaustion, saturated with a grief so profound it broke through the fog of my comatose mind.

""I need you to hear me say it,"" the voice wept. ""You have to wake up so I can tell you that I'm sorry. I'm sorry I didn't believe you. I'm sorry I cursed you. Please... little bird, please open your eyes.""

My eyelids felt like lead. Every nerve in my body was screaming as the blood began circulating through dormant capillaries. The burns on my chest flared with fiery agony, but the warmth spreading through my fingers was intoxicating.

I took a shuddering, mechanical breath. The ventilator hissed in response.

Declan shot out of his chair, knocking over a metal tray of surgical instruments that clattered against the floor.

""Doctor! Evans, she's breathing against the tube!""

Hands swarmed around me. Gentle voices coached me to breathe, to relax, to let the machinery do the work. The plastic tube was carefully withdrawn from my throat, leaving me coughing, my throat burning as if I had swallowed glass.

My eyes fluttered open. The blinding fluorescent lights resolved into the sharp, tear-stained face of Declan Harrow.

He looked ruined. His eyes were bloodshot and swollen, his knuckles bruised, his collar torn. But the way he looked at me—with pure, unadulterated reverence, as if I were a miracle pulled straight from the mouth of hell—made the pain disappear.

""Declan..."" I managed to whisper, my voice nothing more than a dry rasp.

A broken sob escaped him, and he collapsed forward, burying his face in the hospital mattress beside my hip, his broad shoulders shaking violently as he wept like a child.

""I'm here,"" he choked out, pressing his lips against the inside of my wrist, where my pulse beat strong and steady against his mouth. ""I'm right here. You're safe. They're all gone, Laurel. The family, the syndicate, the threats... I destroyed them all. It’s over.""

May you like

I lifted my trembling left hand, my fingers tangling weakly into his thick, dark hair. ""You... you heard me through the floor?""

Declan lifted his head, his gray eyes shining with fierce, unbreakable devotion. ""I will spend the rest of my life listening to you, Laurel. I swear to God, I will never stop listening.""
