Chapter 2 - The Redacted Autopsy of a Marriage

At St. Alder Medical Center, Declan’s recovery suite resembled an executive war room. Armed sentries stood at every elevator bank. Infusion lines pumped electrolytes and high-calorie lipid emulsions into his bruised veins. His color was returning, replacing that sickly gray translucence with the bronzed, razor-sharp authority that had once made corporate boardrooms tremble.

I stood beside his bed, completely invisible, watching him sign document after document with a trembling hand.

""The freeze on her assets went through this morning,"" his attorney, Marcus Sterling, said, sliding another manila folder onto the rolling tray. ""Her family’s foundation accounts, her personal trusts in Delaware, the offshore accounts in Grand Cayman—everything is locked down tight. If she tries to swipe a debit card for a cup of coffee anywhere on earth, interpol will flag it in three seconds.""

Declan didn't look up from the signature line. ""I don't care about the money, Marcus. Burn the trust. Liquidate her half of the East Greenwich property. I want her stripped of every cent that carries the Harrow name.""

""Declan, darling,"" Margot purred from the velvet armchair near the window, peeling an orange with a sterling silver knife. ""You need to rest. The doctors said your kidney markers are still elevated. Let Julian handle Laurel. A girl like that, raised with money and delicate manners, can't survive three days sleeping rough. She’ll crawl out of the woodwork soon enough.""

""She isn't delicate,"" Declan snapped, his voice dropping into that terrifying, gravelly register that signaled impending violence. ""She looked me in the eye every morning through that service grate. She watched me beg for my asthma medication, and she didn't blink. She’s cold, Mother. She’s colder than you are.""

A phantom ache throbbed in my incorporeal chest. He didn't know that every breath he took inside that shielded room had filtered out the weaponized acoustic payload aimed at his bedroom. He didn't know that the bitter pill I forced him to swallow each dawn was a high-grade neuro-protective compound I had stolen at gunpoint from his own company's laboratory vault.

Suddenly, the door swung open. A junior detective from the Providence Police Department walked in, clutching a clear plastic evidence bag.

""Mr. Harrow? I'm Detective Miller. We ran the forensic sweeps on the townhouse kitchen.""

Declan looked up, his jaw set like granite. ""Did you find out who she contacted? Did she have an accomplice?""

The detective cleared his throat, clearly intimidated by the armed guards flanking the bed. ""No, sir. That's the strange thing. We found seven encrypted hard drives in the study, all melted with thermite paste. But in the kitchen pantry, we found thirty-two individual medical-grade ampoules of epinephrine, synthetic bronchodilators, and custom peptide stabilizers. Mr. Harrow... she wasn't just hoarding supplies. According to our lab, these doses were specifically calibrated to your exact DNA sequence. If she hadn't administered them, the medical examiner says your respiratory system would have collapsed three weeks ago from acute bronchial edema.""

Declan froze. The pen hovered over the paper, dropping a heavy blot of black ink onto the clean white bond.

""What did you say?"" Declan whispered.
