Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Court

Three weeks later, the morning sun beat down mercilessly on the steps of the Williamson County Courthouse. Derek stood near the bronze double doors, flanked by a flashy, aggressive divorce attorney named Richard Henderson, known across Middle Tennessee for representing crooked executives. Derek had managed to borrow a cheap polyester suit from his brother, but the desperation oozing from his pores was unmistakable. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and his hair was unwashed, slicked back in a poor attempt at respectability.

When my sleek black town car pulled up to the curb, Derek immediately stepped forward, his eyes wild with false bravado.

""You think you're smart, Claire?"" Derek hissed through clenched teeth as I stepped out, dressed in an impeccably tailored navy suit. ""Henderson looked over the trust documents for that mansion across the street. You bought that property while we were legally married! In Tennessee, that's marital property! You hid assets from your spouse. My attorney is going to tear you apart in front of Judge Vance. You're going to lose that mansion, you're going to pay my legal fees, and you're going to give me primary custody of Nora!""

Henderson adjusted his floral tie, offering a condescending smirk. ""Mrs. Donnelly, I strongly suggest you settle this in the hallway before we step into the courtroom. My client is willing to accept fifty percent of the residential equity, sixty thousand dollars a month in rehabilitative alimony, and joint custody with Derek having primary residential status. If you refuse, we will expose your fraudulent offshore concealment in open court.""

My attorney, Evelyn Cross—a fierce, silver-haired powerhouse who had spent thirty years destroying arrogant men in high-asset divorces—stepped between them and smiled with razor-sharp precision.

""Mr. Henderson,"" Evelyn said, her voice dripping with pity. ""I truly hope you collected your retainer in cash before taking this case. Because after the next two hours, your client won't even be able to afford a public bus pass.""

We pushed past them through the security scanners and into Courtroom 4B. The mahogany walls felt heavy with solemn judgment. Judge Eleanor Vance, a no-nonsense jurist with a reputation for mercilessly crushing dishonesty, took her seat on the bench. Her cold, piercing gaze swept over Derek's sloppy appearance before settling on us.

""We are here today on an emergency petition for temporary custody, child support, and asset division filed by Mr. Derek Donnelly,"" Judge Vance announced, adjusting her reading glasses. ""Mr. Henderson, you have fifteen minutes to present your arguments.""

Henderson stood proudly, buttoning his suit jacket. ""Your Honor, this is an open-and-shut case of malicious abandonment and severe financial fraud. Mrs. Claire Donnelly, while pretending to be a faithful wife, secretly purchased a four-point-two-million-dollar luxury estate across the street from the marital residence using marital funds, concealed it behind an anonymous trust, and then abruptly evicted my client and his elderly mother onto the street with zero warning! Furthermore, Mrs. Donnelly is an absentee parent who spends seventy percent of her time out of state, leaving minor child Nora in the sole, loving care of Derek and his family. We demand immediate restoration of residence, full custody, and substantial temporary spousal support!""

Judge Vance didn't even blink. She slowly looked over the paperwork on her desk. ""Mrs. Cross, your response?""
