Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Donnellys

The sight of the three of them scurrying across the quiet suburban street under the watchful eye of armed security guards was nothing short of poetry. Neighbors began peering through their blinds, curious as to why Derek was desperately shoving designer suits into trash bags while Judith sobbed hysterically on the driveway, clutching a cosmetic case.

Kyle tried to jump into the shiny German SUV parked in the driveway, only for the second security guard to tap on the tinted glass with a flashlight.

""Keys on the hood, sir,"" the officer ordered. ""That vehicle is titled to Donnelly Health Logistics Inc. You are not an authorized driver.""

""How am I supposed to leave?"" Kyle yelled, throwing his hands in the air. ""I don't have a car! Derek said this was practically mine!""

""Call a rideshare,"" the guard replied coldly. ""You have fifteen minutes.""

From the second-floor balcony of my limestone estate, I watched the spectacle unfold. Nora was fast asleep in the palatial master bedroom, curled up under an Egyptian cotton duvet, safe from the toxic venom of the family she had innocently loved. My mother stood beside me, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw, holding a steaming mug of chamomile tea I had personally brewed for her.

""Claire,"" Mom said softly, her voice trembling. ""I never wanted to cause trouble between you two. When they asked me to do the laundry, I just thought... I thought I was helping you. I wanted Derek to see that our family loved him.""

I wrapped my arm around her, feeling how light and fragile she was. ""Mom, you didn't cause this. Derek and his family are parasites. They saw your kindness as permission to abuse you. They took advantage of my absence and your generous heart. You will never, ever have to bow your head or scrub another floor for anyone for the rest of your life. Do you hear me?""

Tears slipped silently down Mom's weathered cheeks. She leaned her head against my shoulder, finally letting out a long, shuddering breath she had been holding for months. For the first time in years, she felt safe.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the balcony railing. It was an incoming call from an unknown number. I answered it and put it on speaker.

""Claire? Is this Claire?"" a frantic, breathy female voice spoke. It was Chloe Vance.

""Speaking,"" I replied calmly.

""Claire, Derek just showed up at my apartment in Brentwood with three trash bags of clothes!"" Chloe cried, hysteria lacing her words. ""He's telling me you locked him out, that you're freezing all his accounts! He said the corporate credit card got declined at the gas station! What is going on? He told me he was worth five million dollars and that you two were already legally separated!""

I let out a soft, dry laugh. ""Chloe, Derek doesn't have five dollars to his name, let alone five million. Every suit he wears, every luxury dinner he bought you, and every hotel room you two slept in was paid for by Donnelly Logistics. And since you were an employee of my company when you began this affair, my legal team has already filed a civil suit against you for corporate embezzlement and breach of non-disclosure agreements.""

A sharp, terrified gasp echoed from the other end of the line.

""Wait, Claire, please! I didn't know! He lied to me!"" Chloe shrieked.

""Have a wonderful evening with your new roommate, Chloe. I suggest you both start looking for employment. Minimum wage is a great place to start.""

I ended the call, blocked the number, and turned back to the quiet night sky.
