Chapter 5 - The Frozen Vault

By two o'clock that afternoon, Eleanor’s team had worked a minor miracle through the Richmond Circuit Court. Armed with bank records showing structured transfers, proof of the offshore holding setup, and affidavits signed by both Robert and myself, a judge signed an emergency temporary restraining order freezing every bank account associated with Julian Bennett, Crestline Solutions, and our joint marital holdings.
Julian had no idea.
I was back at the house, having changed the locks with the help of an emergency locksmith Robert had recommended. I was packing Julian’s expensive suits, his golf clubs, and his watches into heavy plastic contractor bags, lining them up neatly on the front porch like discarded trash.
My phone began to buzz incessantly on the kitchen counter. It was Julian.
I let it ring three times before sliding the bar to answer and putting it on speakerphone.
""What did you do?!"" Julian’s voice erupted through the speaker, breathless, furious, and bordering on hysterical.
""Hello, Julian. I hope you found a comfortable hotel,"" I replied casually, taping up a box of his leather-bound engineering manuals.
""My corporate card was declined at the Marriott! My personal debit card was declined at the ATM! When I tried to log into my mobile banking, it said the accounts were restricted by a court order! Claire, have you lost your goddamn mind?!""
""I haven't lost my mind at all,"" I said. ""In fact, for the first time in eleven years, my mind is completely clear. You remember Eleanor Vance, don't you? You played in a charity golf scramble with her husband two years ago.""
A sudden, sharp intake of air hissed over the line. Julian knew exactly who Eleanor Vance was. Every high-earning professional in the Richmond metro area knew her name.
""You went to Eleanor?"" his voice dropped an octave, the anger suddenly replaced by a tremor of panic. ""Claire, Eleanor Vance charges a thousand dollars an hour! She’ll drain every dollar we have just in legal fees!""
""No, Julian,"" I corrected him coolly. ""She is draining every dollar you tried to hide. Crestline Solutions has been placed under a court-appointed receivership. The judge found sufficient preliminary evidence of fraudulent asset dissipation. You can't touch a single penny in Delaware, you can't access the joint savings, and Robert’s attorney has just filed a lis pendens against your vehicle and your portion of the house.""
""You talked to Robert?!"" Julian screamed. ""Are you insane?! Robert is a mechanic with a glorified fencing company! He has no right to touch my money!""
""It wasn't your money, Julian. Ninety-five thousand of it belonged to Robert and Vanessa. Or did you forget that you had her wire her family’s home equity into your dummy shell company?""
There was dead silence on the line. Julian hadn't anticipated that Vanessa would surrender her records. In his narcissistic calculus, he assumed Vanessa would protect the affair to save face with her family, leaving him with total control of the narrative.
""Claire, listen to me,"" Julian plead, his voice dropping into that smooth, manipulative cadence he had used on me for over a decade. ""We can settle this between us. We don't need lawyers taking half of what we worked for. I will sign the house over to you today. Free and clear. I will walk away from the equity. Just release the freeze on the Delaware account so I can pay my firm's retainers. If the partners find out about this—""
""The partners already know,"" I lied smoothly. ""Eleanor served a subpoena for your compensation records and partnership draws at their corporate headquarters forty-five minutes ago.""
A choked sound came from Julian’s throat. ""You ruined me.""
May you like
""No, Julian,"" I said, looking out the front window at the quiet, tree-lined street we had chosen together when we were twenty-five and idealistic. ""You ruined yourself the moment you brought another woman into our home and laughed about how easy I was to fool. Your clothes are on the porch. If they aren't gone by five, the neighborhood donation truck is picking them up.""
I hung up without waiting for an answer.
