Chapter 3 - The Frozen Vault

Bennett’s knees gave out beneath him, and he collapsed onto the edge of the kitchen chair, clutching his chest as if his heart were tearing in two. The sheer humiliation of being played for a complete fool in front of the wife he had mocked was suffocating him.

"You stole my money," Bennett gasped, pointing a shaking finger at Heather. "That was my money! That was our future!"

"Actually, it was Clara's money," Naomi corrected coldly, pulling a heavy blue binder from her briefcase. "According to the last seven years of state tax filings, sixty-five percent of the liquid capital deposited into your joint checking account originated from Clara's family inheritance and her commercial graphic consulting firm."

Heather lunged for the front door, desperate to get into the Lexus and vanish before the reality of the situation pinned her down. But before her hand could grasp the brass knob, two uniformed officers from the municipal police department stepped onto the porch, blocking her exit.

"Heather Vance-Jenkins?" the taller officer asked, holding a clipboard with an active summons. "Step back inside the residence, please. Do not attempt to leave the premises."

"This is a civil matter!" Heather shrieked, her voice turning piercing and desperate. "You can't hold me here! This is a domestic dispute between these two pathetic losers!"

"Grand larceny, interstate financial fraud, and identity theft are federal felonies, Mrs. Vance," Naomi stated with a calm, predatory smile. "At eight-fifteen this morning, an emergency injunction signed by Judge Morrison of the Second District Court froze every single asset linked to the Apex Horizon LLC."

Heather's jaw dropped open. "You... you couldn't have. Corey was supposed to execute the final wire transfer at nine sharp!"

"Your husband tried," Naomi said, tapping her tablet screen and turning it toward the room. "The transfer was flagged and quarantined by the fraud division of First Horizon Trust ninety minutes ago. When your husband attempted to access the safe deposit box at the Reno branch forty minutes later, federal marshals were waiting for him in the lobby."

Bennett stared at the screen in pure disbelief. A live surveillance freeze-frame showed a man in a leather jacket being handcuffed against a bank counter while bank tellers looked on in shock.

The grand escape Heather had planned with her real husband was completely, irrevocably dead.

"You took our honeymoon suitcase to play house in Lake Tahoe," I whispered, walking over to Bennett and looking down at him. "You laughed in my face on Friday and told me I couldn't survive without you. Look at you now."

Bennett buried his face in his hands, weeping openly, while the police officers took Heather by the elbows and led her out the door in cuffs.
