Chapter 1 - The Name on the Signature Line

The kitchen smelled of freshly brewed dark roast, but the air was freezing cold. Bennett stood glued to the linoleum floor, still clutching the leather handle of our honeymoon suitcase, his face completely drained of color.
Outside in our driveway, the engine of his Lexus was still idling, with Heather sitting proudly in the passenger seat touching up her lipstick in the vanity mirror. She was waiting for him to carry out his final threats and throw my clothes onto the front lawn.
"What is this, Clara?" Bennett stammered, his confident smirk crumbling into a twitching grimace. "Who gave you permission to invite a stranger into my house?"
Attorney Naomi Gable didn't even blink. She calmly adjusted her gold-rimmed reading glasses, clicked her ballpoint pen, and tapped the top page of the forensic financial dossier lying between us.
"Take a seat, Bennett," Naomi said, her tone level and lethal. "And I strongly advise you to leave that suitcase right where it is, because your jurisdiction over this household ceased at eight o'clock this morning."
Bennett scoffed, attempting to summon the arrogant bravado he had used to terrorize me for years. He dropped the suitcase with a dull thud and marched toward the table, leaning over Naomi with his hands balled into tight fists.
"You think you can intimidate me with a two-bit strip-mall lawyer?" he barked, his spit flying across the polished wood. "Every dime in that joint account was earned through my corporate commissions! Clara hasn't produced a real paycheck since she took that part-time nonprofit nonsense!"
"Sit down and read line four," Naomi replied calmly, not moving an inch.
Trembling with rage, Bennett grabbed the white paper and brought it up to his eyes. He expected to see a routine emergency restraining order or a standard divorce filing demanding alimony.
Instead, his eyes widened into dinner plates as he scanned the official banking verification records from First Horizon Trust.
The offshore shadow account he had been funneling forty thousand dollars into wasn't solely in his name. It had been registered as an irrevocable corporate holding trust under an LLC titled Apex Horizon Ventures.
Beneath the corporate title was the listed primary signatory and managing beneficiary: Corey Daniel Vance.

Bennett dropped the paper onto the table as if it were coated in burning acid. "Who the hell is Corey Vance? Why is another man's name on my private account?"
"Corey Vance isn't another man, Bennett," I said quietly, speaking for the first time since he walked into the house. "Corey Vance is Heather's lawful husband of seven years."
