Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The dining room transformed into a courtroom where the verdict had already been rendered. Richard didn't wait for me to answer. He stood up so violently that his heavy oak chair tumbled backward, crashing onto the hardwood floor.
""Marcus, search the house,"" Richard commanded, his mask of suburban respectability completely shattered. His veins bulged along his temples, his face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. ""Start with the basement, then the upstairs bedrooms.""
""Don't you dare touch a thing in this house, Marcus,"" I said, stepping firmly between Marcus and the hallway.
Marcus paused, surprised by the sudden, fierce defiance in my voice, but Richard shoved past him, grabbing my upper arm with a grip like an iron vise.
""You knew,"" Richard hissed, his face inches from mine, his breath hot with rage. ""You've had him here all day. Where is he, Sarah? Where is that worthless, ungrateful brat?""
""He's right here, Dad.""
Ethan’s voice echoed down from the top of the grand staircase.
Richard froze, his grip loosening on my arm as we both turned toward the foyer.
Ethan stood on the landing, descending the stairs with slow, deliberate steps. He wasn't the trembling, terrified boy who had stood on my porch six hours ago. His shoulders were squared, his chin held high, and in his arms, wrapped securely in the clean receiving blankets I had brought him, was the baby girl.
""Ethan, get back!"" I shouted, trying to pull away from Richard.
Marcus immediately reached into his jacket, his hand moving toward the leather holster concealed beneath his suit.
""Don't do it, Marcus,"" Ethan warned, holding up a small, black remote control with his free hand. ""I wired Clara's external hard drive to the cloud server at the university newspaper where my old roommate works. If I don't enter my security pin every ten minutes, every file, every wire transfer, and every recorded phone call between you and my father goes live to thirty-two media outlets and the state attorney general's office.""
Marcus’s hand hesitated inside his coat. He looked at Richard, his former confidence wavering. ""Richard... what is this?""
""He's bluffing!"" Richard roared, stepping toward the stairs. ""He's a frightened child trying to play grown-up games! Give me that baby, Ethan. Right now!""
""She's not a bargaining chip, Dad,"" Ethan said, reaching the bottom step and standing his ground. ""She’s your daughter. Clara’s daughter. My sister. And you were going to sell her to an unregistered broker in Panama to keep your country club friends from finding out you’re a thief and an adulterer.""
""I built this family!"" Richard shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. ""Every luxury you had, every door that opened for you, came from my discipline! You think you know how the world works? The world belongs to men who take what they want and manage the consequences! You were weak the day you were born, and you’re weak today!""
""Is that what you told Clara when you gave her those pills?"" I interrupted, stepping forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our son.
Richard's eyes widened, a sudden flicker of genuine dread piercing through his rage. ""What are you talking about?""
""The prenatal vitamins from Dr. Sterling’s private clinic, Richard,"" I said, pulling the amber bottle from my apron pocket and holding it in the light of the chandelier. ""Clara didn't take them all. She saved the rest. And she wrote down every word you said to her the night you brought them to her bedside.""
Richard lunged forward to snatch the bottle from my hand, but Ethan moved instantly, shifting the baby to his left arm and driving his right shoulder squarely into Richard's chest.
The impact sent Richard stumbling backward, knocking over the decorative antique table in the foyer. A ceramic vase shattered across the floor in an explosion of white porcelain shards.
""Don't you ever touch my mother again,"" Ethan said, his voice trembling with years of suppressed pain, yet steady as steel.
Richard scrambled to his feet, his dignity completely stripped away, revealing the raw, cornered beast beneath. He turned to his cousin, his voice hysterical. ""Marcus! Take the baby! Take the bottle! Now!""

Marcus drew his weapon, leveling the black barrel directly at Ethan’s chest.
""I'm sorry, kid,"" Marcus muttered, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""You should have stayed on that bus.""
