Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Attic

My feet felt rooted to the floorboards as Richard's muffled words bled through the wood. He wasn't just hiding a child; he was actively hunting his own son with hired muscle. The cold realization settled into my bones like lead. The man I had shared a bed with for over two decades wasn't just an unfaithful husband; he was a calculating monster who viewed his own flesh and blood as collateral damage to protect his social standing.

I waited until I heard the sound of Richard opening the heavy metal filing cabinet inside his office before I slipped quietly up the stairs. Each stair creaked like a gunshot in my hyper-vigilant mind. I reached the third-floor landing, bypassed the guest bedrooms, and stepped into the dim, dusty corridor leading to the cedar storage closet.

I tapped the wooden panel three times: two quick raps, one slow.

A second later, the latch clicked, and Ethan cracked the door open. His face was pale, his eyes bloodshot with terror.

""Is he still downstairs?"" Ethan whispered, stepping aside so I could slip into the small, finished storage room.

""He's in his office making calls to an investigator named Marcus,"" I replied, kneeling on the floor beside the makeshift nest Ethan had built out of old quilts. The baby was awake now, large, luminous gray eyes staring up at the bare bulb hanging from the ceiling. She didn't cry. It was as if she understood that survival required absolute silence.

""Marcus Vance,"" Ethan said through gritted teeth. ""Dad's cousin. The retired cop who runs a private security firm in the city. Marcus does all of Dad's dirty work. He was the one who helped intimidate Clara into signing a non-disclosure agreement when she first discovered she was pregnant.""

""We need to call the police, Ethan,"" I said, reaching down to stroke the baby's impossibly soft cheek. ""Right now. We have the birth certificate, we have the photos, and we have Clara's documents.""

""The police won't touch this, Mom,"" Ethan said, his voice trembling with bitter experience. ""Not the local precinct. Dad sits on the municipal oversight board. Marcus played golf with the chief of police last Sunday. If we call them, they’ll call Dad before they even send a cruiser. They’ll treat it as a domestic custody dispute. Dad will claim I abducted the baby from the hospital—which, legally speaking, I did. I don't have legal guardianship, Mom. He's listed as the biological father on the hospital paperwork. Under the law right now, I’m a kidnapper, and he’s the grieving father trying to handle an adoption.""

The horrific reality of the trap hit me. Richard had orchestrated every legal angle. If we stepped out the front door, we were criminals. If we stayed here, we were sitting ducks.

""What was in Clara’s safe deposit box, Ethan?"" I asked, looking toward the open suitcase. ""There has to be something that breaks his hold.""

Ethan pulled out a thick, leather-bound journal and a flash drive encased in clear plastic. ""Clara wasn't stupid, Mom. She loved him at first, but when she realized he was never leaving you and that he was siphoning funds from his corporate clients into offshore accounts to pay her rent, she began keeping records. Every wire transfer, every threat he sent via encrypted text, every cash drop Marcus made. But more importantly... Clara kept the medical logs.""

""What medical logs?""

Ethan looked up, his expression hollowed by grief. ""Clara didn't die from natural delivery complications. Dad visited her private room on Sunday night, twenty-four hours before she gave birth. He brought her specialized prenatal supplements from a private clinic. Clara took one, had a violent allergic reaction that triggered immediate labor, and died of respiratory and circulatory collapse on the operating table. The hospital called it an unavoidable tragedy. But Clara suspected something was wrong weeks ago. She wrote in this journal: 'If I don't survive childbirth, look at the vitamins Richard gave me.' She saved the original bottle in her safe deposit box.""

Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an amber prescription bottle containing half a dozen white unmarked pills.

""Dad didn't just abandon her,"" Ethan whispered, his voice shaking violently. ""He eliminated her so she couldn't demand child support or expose his embezzlement. And now, he's going to do the same to this little girl by handing her over to some black-market adoption broker.""

Downstairs, the heavy front door slammed shut. Footsteps began ascending the main staircase.
