Chapter 6 - The Free Fall

Thomas Meyers dropped a heavy, fifty-page legal document directly onto Daniel’s lap as he knelt on the floor.

""Full custody to Emily,"" Meyers recited with clinical precision. ""Supervised visitation at her discretion following mandatory psychological evaluation. Complete waiver of any claim to the Whitmore estate, Whitmore Tower, the Maplewood residence, and Emily's separate property. In exchange, Mrs. Vance will not refer your fraudulent corporate balance sheets to the District Attorney's financial crimes division—provided you vacate the premises of this building within ten minutes and sign the surrender of Vance Strategic Partners' corporate charter.""

Daniel stared at the pen Meyers held out to him. It was a gold Montblanc—the kind Daniel had always kept in his breast pocket to appear wealthy during client pitches.

With shaking fingers, he signed his name on the designated lines. His signature was crooked, broken, and unrecognizable.

When he finished, two armed building security officers stepped forward, lifting him by his elbows and hoisting him to his feet. They stripped his executive security badge from his lanyard, confiscated his parking garage pass, and escorted him out of the boardroom.

Down in the rain on 42nd Street, Daniel was pushed through the revolving doors onto the sidewalk. The autumn wind was biting, whipping freezing rain against his face.

He didn't have his car keys—the leased Mercedes had been locked inside the commercial garage because the parking account was tied to the defaulted corporate lease. He stood on the curb, his expensive suit soaking up the dirty city water, clutching a soggy cardboard box containing a few framed family photos and his spare desk shoes.

He dialed Vanessa’s number. She picked up on the fifth ring, the sound of traffic and shouting in the background.

""Daniel?!"" she screamed. ""Where are you?! The moving trucks just drove away! My luggage is sitting on the sidewalk in the mud! The neighbors are taking pictures on their phones! What did your lawyers say?!""

""It's... it's over, Vanessa,"" Daniel whispered, shivering uncontrollably. ""Emily owns everything. The building. The firm. The house. All of it.""

A dead silence hung on the other end of the line.

""What do you mean she owns everything?"" Vanessa’s voice lost all its warmth, instantly transforming into venomous contempt. ""What about your consulting partnership? What about my marketing contract? What about the half-million-dollar distribution you promised me for next month?!""

""There is no distribution,"" Daniel stammered, wiping rainwater from his eyes. ""The firm is liquidated. Vanessa, I need you to pick me up. I don't have my car. We can go to your apartment, pool our savings, figure out—""

""My apartment?"" Vanessa shrieked with cold disgust. ""My apartment is a six-hundred-square-foot studio! I left my fiancé for you because you told me you were a multi-millionaire real estate magnate! You're a broke, middle-aged fraud who just got evicted by his own wife!""

""Vanessa, wait! I gave you my wife's diamond earrings! I bought you that sports car!""

""The car lease is under your bankrupt firm's name, you idiot! The repo company called me twenty minutes ago!"" Vanessa snarled. ""Don't you ever call this number again. Lose my contact, Daniel. You're completely pathetic.""

The call disconnected with a hollow beep.

Daniel stood on the crowded Manhattan street corner, surrounded by strangers rushing home under black umbrellas. A city bus roared past, splashing a wave of muddy puddle water across his knees. He looked up at the towering monolith of Whitmore Tower. Far above, on the forty-eighth floor, a warm golden light glowed behind the panoramic glass.

He had thought he was a king casting out an unworthy queen. In reality, he had been nothing more than a beggar who mistook a borrowed castle for his own kingdom.
