Chapter 3 - The Notice on the Door

The next morning, Daniel woke up at seven o'clock on Maplewood Lane, utterly convinced he was the master of his destiny.
He took his time sipping expensive espresso, admiring the way Vanessa looked in her silk robe as she lounged on our back patio. He had spent the morning mentally drafting an email to his corporate contacts announcing that he had ""streamlined his personal affairs"" to better focus on rapid commercial growth. He genuinely believed Emily was sitting in a dingy, damp motel room somewhere near the turnpike, sobbing over a box of dry cereal while trying to figure out how to afford daycare.
""You should fire that secretary of yours today, too,"" Vanessa murmured, blowing steam from her cup. ""We need fresh, young talent at Vance Strategic. People who project power. We'll host a cocktail party right here by the pool next weekend to introduce our partners to the new firm dynamic.""
""Consider it done,"" Daniel smiled, adjusting his tie in the reflection of the glass door. ""Everything in this house belongs to the future now.""
At eight-thirty, Daniel pulled his leased Mercedes into the underground parking structure of Whitmore Tower. He strutted into the polished brass lobby, nodding curtly to the security staff, his briefcase swinging with executive confidence. He tapped his foot impatiently in the express elevator as it rocketed toward the sixteenth floor, anticipating an important meeting with an angel investor whose capital could rescue his overdrawn balance sheet.
When the elevator doors slid open onto the sixteenth floor, Daniel stopped dead in his tracks.
Two men in navy jumpsuits were standing outside the glass double doors of Vance Strategic Partners, holding cordless drills and heavy-duty steel lock cylinders. Beside them stood a woman with hair pulled back in a severe bun, clutching a black leather legal binder.
Across the frosted glass entrance, a massive, bright neon-orange placard had been taped directly over Daniel’s gold-embossed company logo.
COMMERCIAL WRIT OF POSSESSION & FORFEITURE: PREMISES SEIZED UNDER SECTION 711 OF THE REAL PROPERTY LAW.
""What the hell is this?"" Daniel shouted, his briefcase dropping against his knee. He lunged forward, grabbing the paper. ""Who authorized you to touch my doors? I am Daniel Vance, managing partner of this firm!""
The woman with the binder turned smoothly. Her badge identified her as Clara Sterling, Senior Enforcement Counsel for Whitmore Property Holdings.
""Mr. Vance,"" she said with chilling precision. ""As of midnight, your ninety-day forbearance agreement regarding your arrears of two hundred and fourteen thousand dollars in unpaid rent and municipal fees officially lapsed without cure. Whitmore Property Holdings has exercised its right of immediate non-judicial reentry under Clause 42-B of your commercial lease.""
Daniel's face drained of color, turning the shade of spoiled milk. ""Arrears? I spoke to your leasing agent last week! We agreed on an extension until the second quarter! I have clients arriving here in forty minutes! My servers, my files, my entire infrastructure is behind that glass!""
""The grace period was canceled at the explicit instruction of the owner and majority shareholder,"" Clara replied calmly, checking a digital tablet. ""All locks are being changed. The firm’s digital servers have been placed into legal escrow pending financial forensic auditing. You have sixty minutes to retrieve essential personal effects under the supervision of building security. Everything else is being inventoried for landlord lien liquidation.""
""Who is the owner?"" Daniel roared, his polished facade cracking into wild panic as several employees from neighboring offices poked their heads into the hallway to watch the spectacle. ""Get them on the phone right now! Let me speak to Richard Whitmore! I know him! I've met him at the country club!""
""Richard Whitmore passed away four years ago, Mr. Vance,"" Clara said, her eyebrow arching slightly. ""And the sole beneficiary who controls this high-rise took office at eight o'clock this morning. She reviewed your file personally.""
""She?"" Daniel stammered, his mind spinning like a broken wheel. ""Who is she? Give me her name!""
""Mrs. Emily Vance,"" Clara stated evenly.
May you like
Daniel burst into a loud, frantic laugh that bordered on hysterical. ""Emily? Are you out of your mind? My wife is an unemployed medical transcriber who doesn't have two nickels to rub together! She's currently living out of cardboard boxes in a budget motel! You've got the wrong company, lady! Check the paperwork!""
""There is no mistake, Mr. Vance,"" Clara said, stepping aside as the locksmith clicked the heavy new deadbolt into place with a resounding, metallic snap. ""Mrs. Vance is the sole heir to Margaret Whitmore's entire estate. Including Whitmore Tower. She is waiting for you in the executive boardroom on the forty-eighth floor. You have precisely five minutes before security escorts you off the premises.""
